“In every field of human endeavor, he that is first must perpetually
live in the white light of publicity. Whether the leadership be vested
in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at
work.
In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward and the
punishment are always the same. The reward is widespread recognition;
the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. When a man’s work
becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for
the envious few.”
“It is not the critic who counts; not the human who points out how the
strong person stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done
them better. The credit belongs to the woman and man who is actually
in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who
strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because

actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the
