Description

What is a dream scenario for the San Francisco Giants this offseason? Everyone's (rightfully) talking about Aaron Judge, Trea Turner, and the rest of the shortstop class, but there's another top talent who may be available. That's right: the Angels should and potentially will trade Shohei Ohtani this offseason. Ohtani will be entering the final year of team control in 2023, and if the Angels can't extend him, they should trade him. If Ohtani is on the market, the SF Giants should and likely will be interested. Superstars with only one year of club control remaining simply don't cost as much as many would expect. Look no further than the Dodgers' deal for Mookie Betts a few years ago. In a dream scenario, the Giants could acquire Ohtani and sign him to a long-term extension. But they'd also need to do more.
Getting back to reality, will the Giants actually spend this offseason? They were expected to do so last year and it just didn't really happen. This year feels different, however, as San Francisco Giants chairman Greg Johnson and President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi are speaking with an increased sense of urgency and a recognition that they need to do more in the offseason to get the club back to being a "highly competitive" team that makes the playoffs each and every year.
What's the future of Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt with the Giants? Crawford, despite his overall disappointing numbers, has been a solid player for the Giants thanks to strong defensive value. Belt wants to keep playing, but it may be with another team other than the SF Giants. Tommy La Stella, however, is the player on a guaranteed deal for next year who may actually be cut loose in the offseason.
