At least the San Francisco Giants' offseason hasn't been boring. The Giants appeared to have signed Aaron Judge for seven minutes, and Carlos Correa for seven days, but when all was said and done they got neither. The last time Locked On Giants and Locked On MLB did a crossover, it was a celebration of sorts as the SF Giants were in agreement with Carlos Correa on a 13-year, $350 million deal. What followed was an absolute nightmare for Giants fans, however, as the SF Giants' deal with Correa fell apart over concerns about his right ankle.
Now that the dust has settled, what is the big takeaway for the Giants and their fans? Clearly the team is willing to make a huge splash in free agency, so at least that (hopefully) bodes well for the future. Shoehi Ohtani is a free agent next offseason, and Juan Soto the year after that. The Giants figure to be major players for both superstars. Manny Machado should also be avilable next offseason as well. But what about the 2023 Giants?
The San Francisco Giants were certainly active this winter, even without Correa's deal working out. They added a couple of quality outfielders in Mitch Haniger and Michael Conforto. They added a couple of solid starters in Ross Stripling and Sean Manaea. And they added a couple of strong bullpen arms in Taylor Rogers, Tyler's twin brother, and Luke Jackson, a big part of the Braves' 2021 World Series title. But is it enough? There's a lot of pressure on the Giants to win now, but they don't look like an obvious playoff team, which was their stated goal going into the offseason. A lot will ride on the Giants' performance in 2023, but after 107 wins in 2021 and 81 in 2022, it's tough to nail down what to expect from them in the fast-approaching upcoming season.
