Description

Pete Cherry joined the Zenways sangha in 2012 after having already been a yoga teacher for many years. He is now a trainee Zen teacher and regular in the community. He lives with his wife and son in London. In this episode, Pete discusses how jealousy and envy have always been his biggest troublesome sticking points. He’s learnt how the need to ‘get even’ or ‘prove yourself right’ can so easily highjack you and take over your actions through the strong magnetic pull of emotion. After realising he often spends hours beating himself up about the way he’s reacted, he explores how getting some perspective, and seeing his actions through the eyes of his son, can reveal new ways of dealing with troublesome people. He also strongly emphasises how important it is to become familiar with your bodily sensations, as they can become sensitive indicators that give you the power to redirect the outcome of a situation. This podcast is sponsored by Zen Minded - An online lifestyle store offering you the very best of Japanese craft, incense & other Zen-inspired home-goods. This is the podcast about how to turn difficult people and relationships into your best teachers. In each episode we'll be exploring different varieties of people, relationships and situations that we find irritating, difficult or painful. Together with a number of Zen friends, I'll be discussing how the practices of Buddhism and mindfulness can help us see our difficult people – in arenas as diverse as fellow commuters, the workplace, neighbours and family – as troublesome buddhas, our greatest teachers.
