Meanwhile, her husband Justin was still in Uganda handling Oliver’s adoption process. It was then Justin learned about a young girl named Zola who also had T1D. The Cheney couple immediately knew Zola had to be part of the family because of the unique similarity Keary shares with her.

Keary and Zola now serve as active leaders within the diabetes community and share their story on Instagram to inspire and empower others living with T1D. With each other’s support and the help of their Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitors, the two have been able to thrive despite their condition – Keary even ran the NYC Marathon on Nov. 3.
