Description

In today’s episode we continue to highlight films from the Krakow International Film Festival  featuring a conversation with Francesca Mazzoleni, from Italy. Francesca graduated from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome in 2015 and has directed short films and documentaries since that won several awards. Including, Nowhere, I Know You Can Hear Me, and 1989. She made her feature film debut in 2018 with her film That’s Life  and is now successfully traveling the festival circuit with her second feature film, the documentary, Punta Sacra (2020) which had its World Premiere at Visions du Réel and received the jury award for best feature film. It also was part of the documentary film competition at Krakow International Film Festival and had its market premiere at Cannes Marche du Film, the first major virtual market since the start of the pandemic. Punta Sacra (2020) is a sensitive documentary which focuses on a very tight community, living in illegal houses on the last triangle of habitable space at the mouth of the Tiber. Its inhabitants call it Punta Sacra, Sacred Point. We find a community resisting the forces of nature and the ever-existing threat of forced eviction, with a thirst for celebrating the community that is strong, women centered and there to stay. The film is a character-driven story with a nostalgic feel that is built around themes of resistance, resilience, sisterhood and community. Mazzoleni demonstrates some very clear choices in her approach in form and editing, resulting in a story that leaves us with a feeling of hope. Today we will be discussing this film and the process of its creation with director Francesca Mazzoleni. To moderate the conversation, Yvonne Nouwen, a fellow documentary filmmaker from Amsterdam and 2019 graduate of the Doc Nomads Master’s program facilitates the discussion.
