Description

This year has brought a lot of changes we weren’t ready for, moms, and this episode brings on Dr. Saba Maroof, MD, a very busy psychiatrist whose work tripled as a result of the pandemic! She’s seen a lot and has had her pulse on the Muslim American psyche pre-pandemic, but there are some specific Muslim mental health needs she’s seeing arise as a result of the lockdown. Let’s address what the hang-ups are in the Muslim community, as well as without it, about mental health, address the burdens of motherhood that put her mental health needs on the back burner and further at risk of crisis, and figure out how to identify what we can and cannot control of our emotions and minds. Don’t wait until it gets out of hand, ya’ll! If you FEEL something is off, DO something ASAP.Find out the names of what you might be feeling and let us know, “How YOU doin?”Links:https://youtu.be/NrB8Iamo0OAFind Dr. Saba Maroof, MD on IG: @artofpsychiatryThe COVID Cloud by Dr. Jessi Gold, MD, MS: https://www.instyle.com/lifestyle/covid-cloud-concentration-memory-issues Find a Muslim therapist: https://muslimmentalhealth.com/directory/ or try https://seemamentalhealth.com/find-a-therapist/ FREE Physician Support Line for doctors coping with coronavirus staffed by volunteer psychiatrists helping their colleagues on the front lines: 1-888-409-0141, non-physicians can dial “1” for help and physicians can dial “2” to get someone to meet their specific needsAmerican Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for resources on COVID coping for adults: https://www.aacap.org/ Child Mind Institute: https://childmind.org/ American Psychological Association: https://www.apa.org/The Jed Foundation: https://www.jedfoundation.org/?gclid=CjwKCAiA_eb-BRB2EiwAGBnXXsmMEvh6EtxIztbu6v6Ce48r2HaYobw_GKbQEoFdfgQz0rJM9dqheBoCcCYQAvD_BwE  Minnesota Masjid 2017 bombing story: https://www.npr.org/2020/12/09/944870427/militia-group-leader-guilty-of-minnesota-mosque-pipe-bomb-attack Web: www.mommyingwhilemuslim.comEmail: mommyingwhilemuslim@gmail.comFB: Mommying While Muslim page and Mommyingwhilemuslim groupIG: @mommyingwhilemuslimpodcastSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/mommyingwhilemuslimpodcast)

Mommying While Muslim is a one of a kind podcast where two American born and bred Muslim moms share their experiences to raise second generation kids. Having experienced both pre and post 9/11 America, they're acutely aware of the unique challenges their families face on top of the regular messes that all moms share. Mommying While Muslim is a space to take back their stories, and tell those no one will air on the news or portray fully or fairly in the media.Zaiba Hasan and Uzma Jafri are moms first, careerwomen second, and global citizens at heart. They meet taboo topics head on because they weren't allowed to do it growing up, not at home or at school and work. They aim to better their immediate households, communities, and their momsisterhood the world over by telling the truths sometimes people don't want to face or to hear. Not everyone has the privileges they have, and they are eager to learn more than they are to share their own experiences. Always looking to give back, they find women and families who need a mic because no one needs a voice; they just need an opportunity to speak. Besides tough social issues, they also tackle political ones because when laws affect their kids, they're coming for them as well as the ones who make them! There's no lane that doesn't get taken here.Along the way, they recruit momallies for Muslim Americans who have been inordinately targeted for the last 20 years. True moms know that ALL our children deserve to be safe, loved, and happy, and we bust every yellow brick on the Islamaphobic road to make sure they all are. If you like good trouble, this one's for you!
