Description
How to get people to care about your business as much as you do! Entrepreneurship can feel so lonely. You carry all the weight on your shoulders. Even If you’re lucky enough to have a team, you can still feel like it’s all up to you. It can feel like people are just showing up to check off boxes and cash a paycheck but if something goes wrong, you’re the one that has to fix it. Your constantly putting out fires you didn’t start. I hear this over and over, “no one cares about my business as much as I do. How do I get my team to want this as much as I do?” It feels like its impossible, yet you know that there has to be a better way, because this way isn’t working. The good news is it is possible, but there are a few steps you need to take to do it right. So How do you get buy in? Share the vision and how they impact it Don’t just share we’re trying to hit 500 clients, or $750,000 in annual revenues. Explain what that means. Who do you help, how do you serve. For us, we help people get their lives back that the business stole from them. We not only change businesses but we change families. Mom or dad get to eat family dinners without getting interrupted from work. They don’t have to miss important milestones in their family’s life. That’s what we do. Make sure they understand what their role specifically plays in that greater mission. Make it be about them and not just you and your business. Let them share in the perks Find people that want to create a partnership. Not a real partnership where they own a portion of your business, but a partnership where they win when they contribute to the company wins. For instance, we work with a company for our paid youtube ads and when they get a kick back from our profit. They are motivated for us to win because they win as well. Or you can incentivize people based on actions. If our free trials is what gets people to sign up for dance classes, how do I incentivize the desk to focus on trials? Incentivize the activities that lead to company wins. Showcasing a leaderboard can also sometimes spark a friendly competition and make people want to win. Again, when they win the company wins! Hold them accountable Most people need accountability. But most small business owners are too busy to give it and things slip through the cracks. Setting key performance indicators and checking them on a weekly basis will help show both the employee and the owner what is happening in the business. True accountability is not letting things go that you know should be happening. Set up a 1:1 meeting with each individual that reports to you. If you have managers you’ll want them to have a meeting with their direct reports and so on. The manager needs to be reviewing KPI’s on a weekly basis and having a discussion around it.
