Description
Many of us sometimes think, what will happen if I stop working one day? Lest we attach undue importance to our actions and puff up our ego, Shri Krishna gives us a lesson in humility. He reveals that ultimately, it is he who is running the show. If he wants to do something, he will do it with whatever means available.
Shri Krishna has revealed to Arjun his will that the Kauravas should perish and the kingdom of Hastinapur should be administered by the Pandavas in accordance with the rules of dharma. He has already decided the annihilation of the unrighteous and the victory of the righteous as the outcome of the battle. He now informs Arjun that he wishes him to be the nimitta-mātram, or the instrument of his work. Opportunities that come our way to accomplish something for the pleasure of the Lord are very special blessings. It is by taking these opportunities that we attract his special grace and achieve our permanent position as the servant of God.
Here is the crux of karma yoga. If we fulfill our duties with a spirit of detachment, we align ourselves with Ishvara’s vision. We become a “nimitta” or an instrument of Ishvara. But if we assert our selfish desires and our will, we only entrap ourselves in the material world and set ourselves up for a painful existence.
