Description
Let’s face it, kids these days are much more informed about sex and their gender identity than years ago. I know that when I was a child that we had sex education in seventh or eighth grade and it was very vague and not at all informative.
Now that I’m a parent I find it so important to have open conversations with my children so that they feel comfortable telling us anything. Dr. Kathryn Lowe joins me on this episode to educate us on how we can support our children, especially if they are a part of the LGBTQ community.
Dr. Katherine Lowe is a pediatrician with a particular interest in gender diverse youth. She is a co-author of the novel You-ology: A Puberty Guide for Every Body, which she began writing after she realized there was a lack of resources for LGBTQ teens. Dr. Lowe is also a clinical assistant professor with the University of Washington School of Medicine. She is also an executive committee member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on LGBT Health and Wellness.
In this episode we discuss:
Appropriate definitions of gender diverse common terms
Easy ways to support gender diverse children
Strategies for preparing adults to have gender conversations with their children
Tips for being inclusive when talking about puberty
Ways to support your transgender child at their school
