Reclaim Your Inner Entrepreneur - Atul Yadav
INTRODUCTION
Read the directions and directly you will be directed in the right direction.
LEWIS CARROLL
This series of books, beginning with this book, is an attempt to give light-hearted reading material for many things that people are interested in but are held back due to the complex nature of the available books. The tone of these books is friendly, and the attempt is to put the reader at ease - akin to a conversation with a friend - before the reader starts her journey to the truths of the field.
The above informality does not mean that the content of the text is frivolous. It is based on research by well-known experts in the field, is supported by many anecdotes about successes and failures in the area, and is tied together by a loose thread of relationships.
There is no structure or hierarchy in the book. It is meant to be read many times, not necessarily in the order in which it is presented. You can start with any topic and move on to any other topic that interests you. The important thing is to engage with the text, and some tools are in the book which will make your task easy.
ACTION POINT is the tool that makes you get involved in the text. It asks you to participate in many activities, either writing about what you know or think or doing stuff essential for you to understand the crux of the topic being discussed. Miss these activities at your peril. The book will be useless if you do not act upon these action points. Please write down your answers in the space provided if you have the paperback or kindle scribe; else, keep a notebook handy. These answers will not only open your mind, but would be a good document for the path that you would need to take for your entrepreneurial journey.
Every topic carries the effective practices of seasoned entrepreneurs, many stories of the entrepreneurs facing these issues, and action points the reader should engage in. A lot of research is mentioned in the book, and you can explore the content more in detail by searching for the names of people mentioned on the web.
Your buying and reading the book indicates your desire to improve your life. I am here to support you, and if you have any doubts, suggestions, or requests for help, please feel free to reach out to me on my website http://www.atulyadav.in. Welcome to the journey of growing together.
Disclaimer: I have tried to write this book to the best of my knowledge. There may be inadvertent errors, which I will try to correct when I find them. Please take the advice of your financial or legal consultants before you make any financial commitment based on the advice in the book.
All the best in your journey.
CHAPTER 1
JUST START
The most powerful step anyone can take to turn their dreams into reality is a simple one: you just need to start.
MARC RANDOLPH - FOUNDER OF NETFLIX
In his autobiography, the serial entrepreneur and the founder of Netflix - Marc Randolph - ventures to give some advice at the end. He debunks the myth that entrepreneurs need great ideas to succeed, and most people have none. According to him, everyone who has taken a shower has excellent ideas.
The people who get off the shower and do something about the ideas are the ones who achieve something in life. Many people have shared this insight. A startup starts with an action, just like any other creation. One step can teach you more than a hundred thoughts.
If you see the history of most famous startups, they are nothing like the idea they started with. The execution of their initial idea gave them the path to better ideas, better products and services, and a way to monetize their creativity and energy.
That step of getting something off her head and converting it to something concrete energizes entrepreneurs and people around her.
It liberates one from the fear of failure and wasting time.
It is the first concrete and natural step towards building a life of creation and wonder.
A similar phenomenon is seen in most creative fields.
In Garage Rock, kids gather in a garage, pick up some instruments, and play songs. They do not wait to learn music theory, understand the nuts and bolts of creating a song or even play an instrument skillfully.
They learn all that along the way. They play loud music that sounds like noise to most other people.
They hear the comment, You are wasting your time.
, and ignore it.
The ones who iterate, listen to themselves carefully, and learn the theory on the way are the ones who develop into successful musicians. The history of iconic bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stone, The Kinks, and several others fit this exact template.
The comment heard most often by startup founders is, This is not going to work. You are wasting your time.
The first one is usually right. The entrepreneur’s specific concrete idea at that particular time may not work.
But the second comment is wrong. It is not a waste of time for the entrepreneur. It is the stepping stone to a better idea that would eventually work.
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
THOMAS ALVA EDISON
The most effective startup founders and teams follow certain fundamental principles. I have tried to list them below.
DELIBERATE TRIAL AND ERROR:
Starting something is a significant step, but most effective founders learn the process like deliberate practice.
In deliberate practice, most artists regularly analyze their most potent and weakest areas and practice the ones they feel need extra effort to improve their performance.
Effective founders often treat their product development as a live performance by creating a Minimum Viable Product that they regularly test with customers. That helps them to fail fast and keep the lines of work that find the maximum traction.
OPTIMAL CAPITAL ALLOCATION:
Effective entrepreneurs also build effective work allocation processes that optimize team time usage to get ideas manifested faster.
According to Warren Buffett, the critical skill for effective corporate leaders is capital allocation. This skill is even more crucial for entrepreneurs for whom the twin capital of money and time are even more scarce. They learn to use it frugally. They also use the capital better as time goes by.
In that way, they are intelligent learners, and though they may not always start with a
