INTRODUCING JESUS CHRIST
For twenty centuries Jesus Christ has been the dominant figure in Western culture.
Jesus is the center of history. A large proportion of the human race continues to divide history into BC and AD by reference to his birth. In the year 2000 the world population reached 6 billion, while the estimated number of Christians was 1.7 billion or about 28 percent. So nearly one-third of the human race professes to follow Jesus.
Jesus is the focus of Scripture. The Bible is not a random collection of religious documents. As Jesus himself said, These . . . Scriptures . . . testify about me
(John 5:39). And Christian scholars have always recognized this.
Jesus is the heart of mission. Why is it that some Christians cross land and sea, continents and cultures, as missionaries? It is in order to commend not a civilization, an institution, or an ideology but rather a person, Jesus Christ, whom they believe to be unique. Those who see Jesus and surrender to him acknowledge him as the center of their conversion experience.
In these studies we will explore the Christ of the New Testament witness. We begin in Matthew by exploring how Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. Then we move through the Gospels and the letters discovering different aspects of Christ in each book. The testimony of the New Testament to Jesus is both rich in its diversity and at the same time, recognizably, a united witness.
My hope and prayer is that these studies will reveal Jesus Christ as the proper object of our worship, witness, and hope, and as deserving the description incomparable. For he has neither rivals nor peers.
SUGGESTIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDY
1. As you begin each study, pray that God will speak to you through his Word.
2. Read the introduction to the study and respond to the question that follows it. This is designed to help you get into the theme of the study.
3. The studies are written in an inductive format designed to help you discover for yourself what Scripture is saying. Each study deals with a particular passage so that you can really delve into the author’s meaning in that context. Read and reread the passage to be studied. The questions are written using the language of the New International Version, so you may wish to use that version of the Bible. The New Revised Standard Version is also recommended.
4. Each study includes three types of questions. Observation questions ask about the basic facts: who, what, when, where, and how. Interpretation questions delve into the meaning of the passage. Application questions (also found in the Apply
section)
