About this ebook

We live in times of insecurity.
New nations are coming to birth. Social and political patterns are evolving. Violence, terrorism, and war threaten the very foundations of civilization. These external insecurities are reflected in the internal world of the mind and of the spirit. There is widespread distrust of Christian faith and a preference for agnosticism or free thought. Many church members are confused and uncertain.
Against this background, to read the letters of John is to enter another world marked by assurance, knowledge, confidence, and boldness. The certainty of Christian people is twofold: objective (that the Christian religion is true) and subjective (that they have been born of God and possess eternal life). Both are expounded by John, who takes it for granted that this double assurance is right and healthy. Today we urgently need to hear and heed his teaching about the nature of these certainties and the grounds on which they are built.
John Stott was one of the world's leading and most-loved Bible teachers and preachers. In this Bible study guide you can explore Scripture under his guidance, enhancing your own in-depth study with insights gained from his years of immersion in God's Word.

    INTRODUCING

    THE LETTERS OF JOHN

We live in times of insecurity. It seems that everything is changing and nothing is stable. New nations are coming to birth. New social and political patterns are evolving. Violence, terrorism, and war threaten the very foundations of civilization.

These external insecurities are reflected in the internal world of the mind and spirit. Even the Christian church, which has received a kingdom that cannot be shaken and is charged to proclaim him who is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 12:28; 13:8), now often speaks its message softly, shyly, and without conviction. There is widespread distrust of dogmatism and a preference for agnosticism or free thought. Many church members are confused and uncertain.

Against this background, to read the letters of John is to enter another world marked by assurance, knowledge, confidence, and boldness. The predominant theme of these letters is Christian certainty.

John’s letters are called forth by a particular urgent situation in the church: the insidious propaganda of certain false teachers. He describes them by three expressions that draw attention to their diabolical origin, evil influence, and false teaching. First, they are false prophets (1 John 4:1). The true prophet was the mouthpiece of the Spirit of truth, the false prophet of the spirit of error. Second, they are deceivers (2 John 7) because they are leading people astray. Third, they are antichrists or antichrist (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 7) because the substance of their teaching is to deny the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. Once they passed as loyal members of the church, but now they have seceded and gone out to spread their pernicious lies. Some of the remaining church members are apparently in a wavering and insecure state, so John needs to reassure and strengthen them. His emphasis is on the differences between the genuine Christian and the spurious, and how to discern between the two.

Today, as in the first century, Christians need the certainty John’s letters offer. A fresh confidence about Christ and about eternal life, based on the grounds John gives, can again lead Christian people into that boldness of approach to God and of testimony to the world that is still needed in the church today.
