Stone of Wrythe and Witches - Henry Fleiss

Episode 5: To Kill a Lord

Palimay walked alongside Melchom and Astaroth. They marched through the night across the Unbium Desert. The coughing and grunting of the Sentinels grew louder as the night went on.

What’s wrong with them? Palimay asked.

It’s the air, Melchom replied. Just as you had trouble breathing in Simmerian, they have trouble breathing here.

But the air is clean here.

The air of Simmerian was hot and the constant lava pouring from the ground filled the air with ethane and hydrogen. The change in atmosphere, with more oxygen, is uncomfortable to Simmerian lungs. Not understanding such things, Melchom simply replied, clean air is as poisonous to their lungs as the lava stained air is poisonous to yours. They’ll survive, but it will take some time to get used to.

When a Sentinel collapsed from the inability to breathe, they were dragged behind. Either they would regain their strength or they would become tomorrow’s dinner.

By morning they reached the part of Berth where the cracked dry ground turned to grasslands and farms. With the heat of the sun warming their lungs, they rested. Even Astaroth was struggling with the thin, cold air.

By this time, rumors had already spread across much of Berth that war was coming – a war between Simmerian and Paragon with Berth caught in the middle.

    Shanglin traveled to Berth
