    Prologue

The cold damp room felt like it was going for miles. The high cave-like ceiling gave an ominous feel. The Hall of Prophecies. Throughout the time of man, prophecies have helped shape the societies. They brought peace, war, triumph, misfortune, and everything that life wills. The knowledge of the wise ones lost to time. No one understood who they were and how they came to be.

For centuries man fought one another as Kings tried to keep the peace. The people fought for food, land or their own lives. The Kingdom of Rajem built so long ago there is little information of the first court.

King Maycer walked through the hall looking for the one prophecy that will help him to bring peace back to the kingdom. More than 2000 years since the first war with the Warlocks, ended with them pushed back to their lands; the kingdom found peace. Many believed the Warlocks had all died; others believed they decided to leave the kingdom alone. Now they slowly attack the cities.

He walked down the hall ready to give up when he saw the only prophecy setting by itself. The prophecies where stored in glass spheres laminated with an inner fire. As he picked it up, a bright light emanated from the sphere lighting up the whole hall. A deep voice rumbled through the hall.

When days are dark and all hope lost they will come. Five come to fight for all. Five will heal the land. Five will defend honor. Five will bear the mark. For the Goddesses have chosen them. The war will end freeing the people.

As the light from the sphere dimmed, King Maycer put it down. He hoped the prophecy would soon come true, as he knew that he could no longer fight the Warlocks to bring peace back to the kingdom

    Chapter 1

    The Knight

The sun was starting to set as the guards begin rotating their positions. Lance walked up the stair leading to the south wall, his position for the night. The armor covering him from head to toe gleamed in the waning sunlight. Across his breastplate was the royal crest. A long sword hung at his right side, while his shield hooked on his back plate. His short brown hair peeking out from under his helmet, blue eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of enemies. Looks like it will be a quiet night, I hope.

David looked up at him, Me too. Nothing like an attack by them damn Warlocks to ruin a good night. Just as he finished a dark hole opened in the sky around the station and outpoured an onslaught of Warlocks. Lance barely had time to ring the bell when an explosion of fire and stone rocked the west wall. Lance and David turned around just in time to see a small wave of Warlocks heading right for them. Lance drew his sword and reached around and pulled his shield in front of him. David charged at an incoming Warlock, swinging his sword at him. Lance parried a strike from another Warlock, and pushing him to the ground before stabbing him in the chest.

A few more blasts came from the west and north walls. Lance took a moment to look around and saw warlocks pouring into the guard station. Lance turned back in time to dodge an attack meant for his sword arm. As he jumped back he lost his balance for just a moment and the warlock struck him on his side causing him to fall backwards off-the-wall.

David had just glanced up to see Lance fall off-the-wall from a blow to his side. Looking at the Warlock that had struck the blow, David screamed and rushed toward him with his sword high in the air ready to strike a fatal blow. The warlock saw David coming at him and with a quick flick of his hand David went flying back against the wall. His head slammed hard knocking him unconscious. The battle waged on as the Warlocks killed the guards quickly. The Warlocks went through the guard station with great speed, once satisfied, they opened a hole in the sky and left.

Night had fallen when Lance finally woke up from the fall. Rubbing his head, he got to his feet and grabbed his sword, which had fallen away from him. As he ran into the station, he looked around seeing bodies everywhere. He knew he was the last survivor then ran out of the station. His body hurt from the fall but he kept his mind on telling the King of this event. If they attack again the Kingdom needs to be ready. He ran toward the woods west to get to Castle Madger.

    * * *

The sun began to rise as Lance came to the gates of the main city outside Rajem. The market was busy as the store started to open and people walked about starting their day buying supplies and food. Lance walked straight to the nearest guardhouse, knowing he had to get to the King and tell him what had happened. Just as he came up to the guardhouse, a young guard came out and stopped in his tracks. What do you want? Asked the guard irritated at having to stop.

I have news of the Pointe guard station, and I need to report to the King. Though Lance was feeling week and out of breath, he kept a firm stance.

The young guard looked at him with contempt. Well the King is too busy to hear from you, if you have information then you need to send it to your Captain.

Lance stood and looked the guard in the eyes. I need to talk directly to the King about Pointe guard station, and if you don’t take me to the castle to see him I will report you to your Captain.

You will not talk to me in that manner, I will have you arrested if you…. The guard stopped when the door opened and an older guard step out and cleared his throat. Terry, you do not speak to another guard in that manner. I have heard every word and if this man needs to see the King, then we will escort him to the castle, do you understand.

The young guard saluted the man YES SIR. He walked back into the house with his head hanging as though he was a child with his hand caught in the cookie jar. As the older guard looked at Lance, he stood aside as two more guards stepped out and went to Lances’ side. Take him to see the King then report to me when done. YES SIR! The two guards started to walk toward the castle, as Lance fell into step behind them. His mind was running through what had happen at Pointe that he did not bother with the town folk as they walked around.

When the castle gates came into view, Lance felt his fatigue hit him hard and fell to the ground, his two escorts ran to his side and helped him up, supporting him on their shoulders. They looked at the guards in front of the gate We have a guard here who has urgent business with the King, please open the gate. The guards opened the gate. The two guards carried Lance up the steps and into the castle.

The main hall of the castle had flags from each nation under the Kings rule, artwork from the best artists in the kingdom, and stain glass windows depicting the various Kings though the ages. People talked, or looked at the artwork. At the end of the hall stood two guards outside a set of wooden doors twice the size of any man. This was the king’s throne room, where he greeted his subjects or took console with his advisers. People turned around and watch the parade of the three guards, wondering what was happening.

Lance looked around taking in the site of the hall as they walked toward the throne room. He would look around the castle to take in its beauty after delivering his report. He was going through his mind of the attack on the guard station, and exactly what he was going to say to the king. Just as he had finished his thoughts, they had come up to the doors to the throne room.

This guard has a report for the King please let us in.

The guards at the door regarded Lance then opened the door. The conversation the people in the room where having abruptly stopped as they watched the three walked in. Lance saw in their faces the insult, who would dare interrupt their meeting with the King. Lance looked straight at the King, he did not care what these people thought, and his only mission was to deliver his news to the king.

Your Majesty, we are sorry to burst in on the meeting, but this guard said he must see you at once Said one of the guards.

Bring him here at once then Maycer motioned them to step forward. Lance walked passed his two escorts and knelt in front of the king, bowing his head. Your Majesty.

Please take your time. King Maycer looked concerned.

Lance wavered as he stood up to address the king. The two guards behind him put their hands on his arms to steady him. Get him a chair now Maycer yelled to one of his advisers. Lance slowly sat down, he took a deep breathe that made his ribs hurt. He slowly sat up straight, he looked directly at King Maycer, I am Lance de Gowen of the Pointe guard station, and I am sorry to say that it’s destroyed. Gasps went throughout the room. King Maycer stared grimed-faced at Lance. They dropped out of the sky and attacked quickly. I managed to kill a few before I was knocked from the wall and left for dead. When I awoke, I ran into the station and saw that I was the only survivor. I came as fast as I could to report. As he finished he slumped over a bit.

Murmurs could be heard throughout the room as they stared at this brave knight. I thank you for your valiant effort to protect Pointe, and for bringing this news to me. He looked at his main servant and motioned him over. Please take Lance de Gowen to the Priestess for healing and see that he gets a meal and new clothes. The servant bowed his head and motioned to the two guards that walked in with Lance. They helped him out the doors to the priestess.

As soon as they were gone King Maycer looked at his advisers. This is disturbing news. We must work quickly building up our forces to defend this city before they attack it. General Trake, assemble any man strong enough to serve and train them quickly. The General bowed, and then left the room. Mackes, send a message to the Magick Guild, tell them I wish to speak with them. Mackes bowed and left the room. King Maycer looked at his advisers We must not let the Warlocks get any closer to this city. Send messages to every post, guard station, and town, keep them alert and build up their forces as best they can.

Yes your Majesty They said as they bowed and left the room.

The room began to clear as King Maycer sat at his throne thinking over what had just happen. He was losing this war and fast. The Kingdom of Rajem has battled the Warlocks for generations. Though the kingdom had kept the Warlocks forces back, they were gaining numbers and strength.

    Chapter 2

    The Priestess

The market was crowded as people came and went buying what they needed for the day. Cooks buying food and spices, hunters having their gear checked, healers buying herbs and supplies. Sarah wandered from one stall to another looking for herbs for healing potions, cloth for bandages, a new satchel to hold her supplies, and other needs for a Priestess. She came to the town of Verten outside Castle Madger to report to the matron Priestess of the western territory. She figured while she was here she could resupply and pick up new herbs for potions.

She looked up and down the stalls to find what she wanted. Being a fourth level Priestess, she had to buy her supplies, which could become expensive if she
