DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to my mother, C. Ruth (Young) Oakes.
She encouraged me to write from my earliest days. In fact, she hand wrote my first story for me as I dictated it to her. I was about eleven years old. I think she always wanted to be a writer too. My prayer is that I do justice to the faith and confidence she placed in my writing ability. I wish she were here now to read this book. I think she would like it.
I love you, Mom.
A PROPHET’S DREAM
Blood. Silence. Screaming.
A single drop of blood welled up into a tiny pool and silently overflowed. It quietly slid down the groomed white landscape, moving slowly through sweaty coarse white hair until it stopped at the lowest tip of a strand. Again, it became a swelling dark red blob and then fell swiftly through nothingness. It scattered into tiny droplets and disappeared into the dust as it hit the parched, rutted street.
The young boy sitting under a nearby vegetable cart saw the droplets. He saw them hit the ground and become minute dots of mud. And then he screamed. He screamed loud and long, but no one heard. The yelling and shouting muffled his cry. Soldiers, merchants, shoppers, beggars—all yelling, killing, dying.

With a jolt, Nathan jumped up from his stool. The prophet of Israel shouted his age-old battle cry and took up a battle stance. His thin right hand instinctively reached for the sword he no longer wore, but his hand hit the table instead. His sudden, violent movement pushed the table across the brown stone floor until it skidded to a stop in the center of his small, windowless, cell-like room.
Nathan suddenly swept his hands up to the ceiling and shouted in a surreal sing-song voice, God has visited me with a vision!
Recognizing his surroundings, Nathan relaxed his lean but aging muscles and let his arms fall to his side. The baggy sleeves of his full black robe fluttered down and silently moved back and forth. The vision was already fading. Nathan’s agitated breathing was beginning to slow down, and the panic and shock began to subside. Then with one determined movement, he snapped his head back and stretched his body as tall as it would reach until he stood a little taller than his regular six-foot-two.
With eyes gazing upward, Nathan began thinking about how this all began that day. He remembered sitting on his small backless chair reading through a pile of tiny parchment scrolls neatly arranged on his table. Each one was an encrypted report from members of his network of spies throughout the Kingdom. Without warning, he had slumped over his desk and fallen into a trance, neither awake nor asleep. One of the scrolls was still clenched between the two longest fingers of his right hand.
The vision, like all the others, had characteristics of a normal dream. But the visions were so much more than dreams. Through them, the Lord GOD gave Nathan instructions, sometimes in detail and sometimes vague on what to do and where to go. He always remembered every detail of every vision—and would remember them forever.
Now, unpredictably, Nathan spun around. His long robe swirled around his legs and billowed behind him like a dark storm cloud. With young agility, he leaped over the table and landed decisively on the rough stone floor. Still in motion, he yanked open a black wooden door and sprinted into the dark, cold underground tunnel.
The tunnel was deep inside a mountain in a complex honeycomb of natural and manmade connecting passageways and rooms beneath the Royal Palace and under the sprawling city of Jerusalem. Nathan had a long way
