The dark continent of Africa has fascinated explorers, intrigued writers, and created ravenous greed and ambition to plunder nations that have less natural beauty, resources, and raw materials than exist in this sultry, beautiful continent.

Human life arose in Africa; the first man evolved on her pristine shores and in her savannahs and jungles teeming with wildlife. African History for Kids - Dr. History

    Chapter 1: Prehistory

Africa’s prehistory is the study of human evolution and the development of African culture before people could create written records. It’s an incredibly interesting subject (although largely discounted by large groups of people called Creationists). But that’s a whole other discussion. Scientific and archeological evidence clearly shows us, through many, many fascinating discoveries, that human life arose in Africa.

    The Sterkfontein Caves

    Lucy and Co.

One of the most important aspects of African prehistory is that Africa is widely considered the birthplace of humanity, the cradle of humankind. This is because the most ancient human fossils have been found in Africa. This includes the well-known skeleton, Lucy, a female hominid dating back to 3.2 million years ago. She is one of the most famous and significant fossils ever found and has vastly broadened our knowledge of human evolution.

She was of the species Australopithecus afarensis, an early ancestor of modern humans, and her remains are complete enough to have given very significant information. Lucy was thought to be about 3 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 60 pounds. Her bone structure suggested that she was a biped, which meant she walked upright on her two legs, just as we do, but her body was adapted for tree climbing. Bipedalism is a defining feature of the human species. Lucy’s remains are housed at the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis
