Dr. Avriel Epps
Dr. Avriel Epps (she/they) is a scientist who studies how computers think and learn, especially why they sometimes get it wrong about people's identities. They got their PhD at Harvard to learn all about data, human development, and how to make computers fair for everyone. Avriel is excited to help kids understand this big idea!Dr. Epps studies how computers make mistakes about people and how that impacts us. She got her PhD at a school called Harvard, and knows lots about data, which is like computer food! They also help run a group called AI4Abolition, helping people to use AI for good. Avriel has spoken at cool places like Google and on TV about AI and bias. She loves to teach others about keeping themselves safe online and working toward a just society. Their work has been in magazines, scientific journals, and in a documentary called TikTok, Boom. She wrote this book to help kids and grownups understand how to ensure computers make a better world for everyone, not just a privileged few.
