About this ebook
Have you ever looked at movies depicting the future, both utopias and dystopias alike, and wondered, "Could that truly be our future?"
In this book, we will be looking at how technology has progressed through the years to get a glimpse of the future. Here, you will learn how humans lived their lives in the past and how technology has influenced that way of life and transformed it into what it is today. We will also discuss certain turning points in human society that lead us to where we are now.
Once we understand our past, we can begin to look at the present and see how technology is currently influencing our lives. As we discover the changes that are happening all around us, we will be able to construct an image of the future and, hopefully, catch a glimpse of what life in the future may be like.
This book will explore the social implications of technology. Together, we will be answering the following questions: Do we bring about the changes in our society through the technology we develop? Or does technology bring about change through us?

Introduction
What is brought to your mind the moment you think of technology? Is it your brand new smartphone that has more processing power than PCs did 20 years ago? Perhaps it is the staggering number of advancements we have made in transportation, genetic engineering, the medical field, and more.
When the topic of technology is up for discussion, we often neglect to mention or even think about daily luxuries that we take for granted. Things like our clothing, our food, our water, and even our health often go unnoticed in these discussions. Humans are currently heading towards the precipice of technological evolution as we continuously develop better, more capable technologies.
In this book, we will be looking at how humanity's future may be different because of these advancements. However, we will also be taking a look at how our lives are currently influenced by these technologies. As the popular saying goes, The future is now.
We sometimes forget just how seemingly futuristic our lives actually are. We have access to a near unlimited amount of information compared to what we had only 50 years ago. If someone asked you 50 years ago what might have been going on in another country, your answer would have most likely been, I have no idea.
Now, your answer is Let me check
as you look it up on your phone.
But of course, how can you be sure the information that you just accessed on the country in question is reliable? You can't because you are not there. We are very trusting of the information we find online, though we lack any real way of proving its validity. But why is that? The most accurate information you could get would be from someone who lives there or from going there yourself. These days, that is quite an easy feat to accomplish. You can just jump online and find someone in the country of question through forums, chatrooms, social media, blogging, vlogging, etc. Perhaps that is why we are so trusting of the information we find. We are used to trusting the people in front of us.
Unfortunately, not all the information online is valid, and not all of it has been placed there by humans, technically speaking. The online world is crawling with computer programs, protocols, and bots, all of which take up most of the traffic seen online.
Nonetheless, we have access to a large quantity of data. And this incomprehensible level of information access has come at a price for humans as a species. While it’s up for debate what this price may be and whether it will be outweighed by the positives granted by these advancements in our technology, it’s undeniable that this price is currently being paid, most likely by the buying and selling of your personal information. This is another topic that we will be taking a look at in this book.
When you are faced with a difficult problem, what do you do first? Do you try to solve the issue with your own brainpower? Do you double your collective brainpower by asking a nearby friend? Or do you tap into the hivemind, super think tank that is the internet? Is there even any real discernible difference anymore? We are constantly connected to the internet, whether it's willingly or totally unknowingly. When you create accounts and access online platforms, you share your
