    Introduction

Let’s face it. All of our problems began and will end in the garden as we can see in Genesis 3 and Revelation 22. The story of Adam and Eve ended with the promise of Jesus, our Savior, who would come from the woman’s seed. But rebellion put a stake in the human heart from the beginning of man’s days. Every seed of discord for humanity was sown in this early stage. To change the existing course and find answers to life, we must return to the scene in the garden.

Even if we had only the first three chapters of the Bible, they would be sufficient to show us the solution, for here the problem was both assessed and remedied. A solution was promised and provided before our first parents were banished from paradise. In it, we find man’s purpose and identity.

God presents one compelling reason for our existence: companionship: Let us make man in Our Image and Likeness. Let him have dominion over the lower realm of life, to have governance and dominion over all that We created. This is what He purposed in Genesis 1:26. All life forms are owned by God, the All-Sufficient One. He is complete in and of Himself, needing nothing and no one. His true purpose for humanity is defined here simply to share His life with us. What other reason could there be for our purpose?

We find God’s initial assessment of Adam as he went about his task of naming the animals. He watched him as he called each animal, and observed that it was not good for him to be alone. This is the core purpose of humanity. Adam was already complete in essence and nature, but God put a counterpart in him and all of humanity, so that they could also enjoy fellowship with one another.

If only we could see it, we would know all that He desires for us is indeed what is the very best for us: complete security in Him. His plan for humanity and our individual lives is laid out here. He created us simply because He wanted us. If this were not the case, He could have abandoned us in the garden when we betrayed Him. But He did not: He came to our rescue. He stepped out of Eternity and clothed Himself in flesh and blood to live thirty-three years on this earth to carry out His redemptive plan for fallen man. He became the sacrificial lamb for man’s rebellion and death, both in the spiritual and natural realm. He gave us the remedy to the dominance of three appetites —the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. And He saw to the ultimate defeat of the works of Satan to restore man to complete fellowship with Him.

And now I invite you to join me as we explore our legacy of faith in Christ through the following topics:

    Getting to That Place

This chapter is all about my journey to belief. He met me in such a profound and defining way that I could discover the purpose of the tests and trials we face on our journey. I had to learn first to believe His promise that all the tests and trials are designed to deal with every intricate part of us that is not turned over to Jesus.

    A Kind of First Fruits

The Bible tells us that we have been crucified with Christ. How amazing! Before we were born, God cared for our future problems before they became our reality. Because we are alive in Him, Christ paved the way for a new kind of species—a new
