    Introduction

This book is rich in the discourse of the soul. It explores the many elements that help enrich it, refine it, and discipline it in order to test it until it accomplishes its greatest goal: to bring pleasure to God.

What makes up the essence of a man is his spirit and soul. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 tells us that man is a three-part being composed of spirit, soul and body. The spirit of man, as expressed in the Hebrew word ruach in the Old Testament and the Greek word pneuma in the New Testament, is the divine part of man. The soul, nephresh in Hebrew or psuche in Greek, refers to man’s intellect, emotions and will, which are deeply rooted in the spirit. It’s the spirit that is the center of man and is able to connect with God in commanding the soul. The spirit should at all times be the driver of the soul, able to discipline and take charge of it, and not the other way around.

This book is about how the soul has to be nurtured and trained so that it lives at the best that God intended for it.

First, the soul must be trained through the exercise of patience, and this can only be achieved by enduring hard times through a true surrender. In patience, we learn to subdue the flesh, which is always seeking the greatest pleasure for itself.

The soul also embodies the human heart, which is the seat of all that we are. Proverbs 23:7 says: As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. Every action we take starts from the heart, so we must guard it carefully.

We also consider pain. As mature Christians, no matter the severity of the pain, we should view it as a tool to help us grow. Remember, ALL of the miracles in the Bible were for God’s glory, but there was pain before those miracles took place!

Another factor that hinders the soul from truly experiencing fellowship with God is fear. Many of us have experienced pain, which could be severe in the case of trauma. Both experiences evoke fear. When we entertain fear, the soul remains faithless and weak until we surrender our hearts completely to the Holy Spirit.
