The full moon cast a soft light on the forest floor and a breeze was gently moving the night I was born.  The only sound was the tender hooting of an old owl.  I was soft from a summer rain and my seed split open, my tiny tap root came out and went into the damp soil.  Within a few, weeks my tap root had grown into the ground and was drinking water and food from the giving soil.  I went to sleep and grew while I slept.  Eventually I was strong enough to grow a tiny stem and sprout one pine needle, then another and another.

I slept and grew, in a few weeks my pine needles were too many to count.  At last I grew big enough for my mama to notice me.  Everyday she searched the ground around her to see if any of her seeds had taken root.  When she discovered me she was so happy.  She called to my daddy, Look, we have a son, a beautiful son.

My daddy searched the ground, Where? he asked.

Down there in front of us, mama said.

My daddy looked down; finally, he spotted me.  Are you sure you are his mama?  Are you sure I am his daddy? he asked.

Don’t you remember last fall when the big wind blew, your branches hit against my branches and my pine cones fell down? mama asked.

Well, yes I suppose I remember, he said.  But I didn’t think we would have a baby.

That’s what can happen when I drop my cones and my seeds fall out, you know that darling.

Yes, I know. He was upset and it could be heard in his voice.  "I just didn’t think it would happen to us.  I don’t think I’m ready to settle down and raise a baby tree."

    Oh, said mama
