About this ebook

I was inspired to write this story about my wife, Mrs. Ethelinda Braithwaite Edior, and her siblings of their terrifying experiences while residing in their native country known as Belize. They spend most of their teenage lives living on a land known as The Usher's BankSibun River. As they grew into young adults, many disasters threatened them, along with the storms, floods, hurricane, lightning, and roaring thunder as it traveled through the dark, thick clouds. But through it all and by the grace of God, they were all blessed to make it to America whereby each had met their mate, got married, and are living a peaceful Christian life in their communities.

    INTRODUCTION

T he burden canal is a large body of water which flows from the Sibun River into the Belize old river. Through this Burden canal, many inhabitants travelled in their dory or boats to the market to sell their goods from their plantations. Occasionally those inhabitants would be held up by river bandits who would demand all of their money or their goods. If anyone was to resist the river bandit’s orders, they were met with tragic consequences.

This story is about one family who was living on the Usher’s bank Sibun River. This family consists of 3 children, two girls and one boy. The young siblings were always getting into mischievous acts. When one got a beating, the other would also be punished. The eldest girl was modest, kind and loving. She assisted her parents with the house-holds like cooking, washing and cleaning out the house. Yes, those two siblings did many bad things together, the youngest sister would always challenge her brother and wants to fight him but every time she tried to fight him, he would always beat her up whereas their eldest sister most of the time had to come and stop them from fighting, now because of her actions and meanness to her brother, their father would always beat them both. Every other day they were sure to get a beating from their father or mother. During her school years, she fought only boys, no girls messed with Tally.

She was a special kid, the only means of communication on the Usher’s bank Sibun River was a radio station called British Honduras Broadcasting Station. This station usually played the latest songs and so Tally would spend most of her leisure time listening and writing down the words of each top song and after awhile she was able to sing them when the songs came over the airwave. She has good memory, good hearing and sees things that no-one sees. My friend she is gifted, don’t mess with Tally. Just the same, the family endured it all. The kids grew into adult-hood, their parents passed on and so they had to begin their own family. As the years passed on they made it to America. They met their peers and settled down to begin their new venture in life.

Come with us and read the many tragic and frightful times that they had encountered before their success in America.

    CHAPTER 1

    The Mischievous Two

S o, here is the story about this family of five, a father, his wife and three children who struggled and survived the hardships at the Usher’s bank Sibun River. The two youngest, a boy age seven and his sister age five. Those two siblings were always getting into some type of mischief, such as, stealing the neighbor’s fruits or vegetables and so when they were caught, their father would punished them severely but that did not stopped their mischievous acts.

Their hobbies were swimming and diving into the Sibun River. They would compete against each other daily as who could swim the fastest across the river and back. They would even tossed mangoes in the depths of the river as they would dive after them. The one who emerged first with the most mangoes would be the winner. Those acts were their daily hobbies.

While those two youngsters were having their fun daily, their parents would be in the field working their plantation. The elder sister would be doing the house chores. One day, while their parents were out in their plantation, the mischievous two decided to go and make a little garden of their own. So they went and got their parent’s tools, two machetes, two hoes, two rakes, two forks and went to an area to make their garden. As they begun cutting away the bushes and shrubs, the brother was in front of his sister, as she too was busy cutting away the shrubs in front of her. The brother hearing the sound of the machete cutting close behind him, turned and said to his sister, Tally, be careful now, you might chop me, you are chopping too close to my heel. Suppose I should just step back, you might just chop me. Tally was not listening and so when he tried to demonstrate the manner, Tally accidentally chopped him. He howled out, "See, what I told you!" as he began to cry out with pain limping forward. She got frightened, realizing what she had done, dropped her machete and took off running deeper into the woods.

Meanwhile, the brother was howling out in pain as blood came out from his wound. His elder sister heard his cries and ran out to his
