Short Stories in Simple Pros by Rumi .English .Persian - Jalal al-Din Rumi
A powerful and capable king once went hunting with his courtiers in the desert. On the way, he saw a beautiful concubine and fell in love with her. He paid a lot of money and bought the girl from her master. After some time with the concubine, she fell ill and the king became very sad. He summoned skilled doctors from all over the country to the court to treat her and said: My life is dependent on the life of this concubine. If she is not cured, I will die too. Whoever cures my beloved, I will give him gold and pearls.
The doctors said:"We will sacrifice
ourselves and cure her with our consultation
and advice. Each of us is a healing Messiah." The doctors were proud of
their knowledge and did not remember God. God also showed them their helplessness and weakness. No matter what the doctors did, it was of no use. The girl became thin and emaciated like a hair.
due to the severity of the disease. The king wept incessantly. The medicines
had the opposite effect. The king despaired of the doctors. He went barefoot to
the mosque and sat weeping in the mihrab of the mosque. He cried so much that he fainted. When he came to his senses, he prayed. He said: "O God of
mercy, what can I say, you know the secrets of my heart. O God, who has
always been our support, we have made a mistake again. The king prayed from the bottom of his heart. Suddenly, the sea of God's mercy and kindness boiled over. The king fell asleep amid his crying. In his dream, he saw a beautiful and radiant old man who said to him:
O king, rejoice, for God
has accepted your prayer. Tomorrow a stranger will come to the court. He is a
wise doctor. He knows the cure for every disease, he is truthful, and the power
of God is in his soul. Wait for him."
The next morning, as the sun rose, the king sat waiting on top of his palace. Suddenly, the wise and handsome man appeared from afar. He shone like the sun in the shade and like the moon. He was both present and absent, like a dream or a vision. The king saw in his face the same features he had seen in his dream at the mosque. The king rushed to greet him. Although he had never seen the stranger before, he felt an instant sense of familiarity, as if they had known each other for years and their souls were intertwined.
Overjoyed, the king exclaimed, O man, you are my true beloved, not the concubine! She was merely a means to bring me to you.
He embraced the stranger and kissed him, then took his hand and led him with great respect to the top of the palace.
After they had eaten and rested from their journey, the king brought the doctor to the concubine and told him her story.
The wise man examined the girl and performed the necessary tests. He then said, All the medicines of those doctors were useless and only made the patient's condition worse. They were ignorant of her true state and were treating her body when her heart was the one that was sick.
The wise man had discovered the girl's illness, but he did not reveal it to the king. He understood that the girl was suffering from a lovesickness. Her body was healthy, but her heart was in pain.
The young goldsmith cried tears of blood from his eyes. The beautiful face was the enemy of his life, like a peacock whose beautiful feathers are its foe. The goldsmith wailed and said, I am like the deer that the hunter spills its blood for its fragrant musk. I am like the fox that is skinned for its beautiful fur. I am the elephant that is bled for its beautiful ivory tusks. O king, you have killed me. But know that this world is like a mountain, and our deeds echo in it, and the sound of our actions returns to us again.
The goldsmith then closed his lips and died. The concubine was freed from his love. His love was the love of form, a love for impermanent things. Impermanent love does not last. Living love endures. Love for the true Beloved who is everlasting, freshens the eye and soul every moment, like a rosebud. Choose true love, which remains forever. It refreshes your soul. Choose to love the One for whose love all prophets and great ones have attained nobility and greatness. And do not say that there is no path for us to the threshold of Truth. For with the generous and the great forgivers, no task is difficult.
