    Chapter 6- Dead Walking

    Day 7 – Early Morning

    River Run

H ey... Hey... Hey. .. lady.... A gentle voice persistently disturbs Chrissy from her slumber until she reluctantly opens her eyes.

Hmm...What? Chrissy mumbles sleepily as she gradually begins to rise.

You're in my bed, a flame-haired little girl roughly Tommy's age informs her.

Oh, sorry. Lucus said I could crash here.

That’s okay. Lucus is my daddy, and he said to get you up and feed you. Here. Lyn hands Chrissy a wooden bowl filled with a steaming concoction. My name is Lyn.

Hi, Lyn. I'm Chrissy. Chrissy responds, accepting the bowl containing what appears to be a warm serving of oatmeal.

You're welcome. Daddy would like to see you when you're ready. He also says to let Hadvin sleep. He had a rough night, spending half of it throwing up. Lyn walks away, carrying a bucket and making expressions that clearly convey her dislike for its contents.

Chrissy eats quietly, careful not to disturb Hadvin's sleep. She occasionally steals glances at the snoring figure, pondering, I saved only one. He seems well, but he'll need plenty of rest. After finishing her meal, she gathers her things and heads outside.

Lucus is deep in conversation with a tall, stout blonde woman whom Chrissy hasn't met before. As soon as Lucus notices Chrissy, he interrupts their discussion. Chrissy, I'm glad you're awake, he says, turning to the blonde woman. This is my wife, Saray. Saray, meet the young woman who brought Hadvin back.

Thank you for bringing him back, Saray warmly expresses her gratitude, stepping closer to Chrissy and enveloping her in a heartfelt hug. The embrace is filled with appreciation and relief, and Saray's arms provide a comforting gesture.

Accepting the hug, Chrissy feels a rush of conflicting emotions. On one hand, there's deep gratitude for Saray's kind words and gesture. The warmth and sincerity in the embrace offer a brief respite from the hardships she's faced. However, intertwined with this moment of comfort is a pang of sorrow and longing. The hug serves as a reminder of the loving embrace she once shared with her mother.

Chrissy briefly allows herself to be embraced by Saray's warmth, finding solace in their shared gratitude and understanding. Yet, beneath the surface, a poignant ache serves as a reminder of irreplaceable moments. As she teeters on the brink of giving in to that ache and pleading with Saray not to let go, Lucus's deep voice interrupts.

Ease up on the lass; you're squeezing her too tight, Lucus jokes, lightening the mood before reminding Saray, Don't you have to head back to the inn and finish baking?

Oh dear, yes, even with this lull in the war, there have been more travelers lately. Thank you again, Saray replies as she departs.

No problem. Have a good day, Chrissy wishes as she watches Saray leave. She seems to be a nice lady.

Chrissy, I want to express my gratitude for what you did for my family. Please choose anything from my shop, Lucus offers sincerely.

Are you sure? Chrissy responds, taken aback by his generosity and unsure if he genuinely means it.

Yes, it is the least I could do, considering I would like to ask you a favor, Lucus says, prompting Chrissy to browse through some impressive gauntlets.

Take them. They are some of my best work, Lucus insists.

Thanks, but you may not want to give them to me. I have bad news about Helena, Chrissy discloses.

Hadvin has already told us. In fact, I have several men coming by later today to go and deal with the dead. That is why I need your help. We need someone to inform the Jarl of Wyvern Keep about what happened. He’ll send aid while we are gone, Lucus explains.

Speaking of the dead, I found these on some of them, Chrissy says as she retrieves the personal effects and letters and hands them to him. I hope you can get them to their families."

I will try. You are our best choice for going to Wyvern Keep. Hadvin still needs at least a week to recover fully. He plans to go directly to the General in Sun Stone Hold, which is a good three to four weeks of travel by foot. While Wyvern Keep is only a day from here, Lucus points out.

Alright, I’ll go. I’ll take the gauntlets, but how much for this bow and that quiver full of arrows? Chrissy inquires while putting on the gauntlets.

    "I usually get 100 silver
