Chapter 5- Not the Yellow Brick Road

    Day 5 Before Sunset

    Road to Helena

A couple of hours later, Chrissy stood at a crossroads, guided by the weather-worn sign standing sentinel at the fork. The sun's golden descent bathed the landscape in a warm, amber glow as she followed the winding path leading to Helena. The air was filled with the gentle rustle of leaves and the harmonious melody of birdsong, creating a serene ambiance.

The tranquility of the evening enveloped her senses—the soft rustle of leaves brushing against her skin, the warmth of the sun's rays on her face, and the fragrant scent of blooming wildflowers and the earth aroma of the forest ground. Her mind was at ease, immersed in the peaceful reverie of the journey.

This is going to be a breeze.  Radiating anticipation, a beaming smile adorned Chrissy's face at the thought of delivering the goods without any issues.

However, guttural roars that tore through the air abruptly shattered this idyllic scene. The once-peaceful tableau morphed into a discordant symphony of fear. The forest, once filled with the gentle rustle of leaves, fell silent; the birdsong hushed in the aftermath of the unsettling sound. The fragrant scent of wildflowers lingered but was now tainted with an underlying tension, an olfactory undertone of fear. Once familiar, the earthy aroma of the forest now carried a subtle shift as if the very essence of the surroundings had been momentarily altered.

In an instant, Chrissy was jolted from her serene reverie, the roars shattering the peaceful evening and replacing it with an eerie and unsettling tension that hung in the air.

The echoing resonance of the roars penetrated every inch of Chrissy's being. Instinctively, she covered her ears, the pain vibrating through her core, rendering the peaceful surroundings tumultuous. Unable to endure the auditory onslaught any longer, a scream escaped her lips, piercing the serene air. As the haunting sound echoed, an otherworldly presence materialized—an enormous black dragon, its colossal wings casting shadows over the landscape.

As she sought refuge under the towering red fir tree, the ancient and otherworldly aura of the dragon's presence lingered in the air. An icy shiver ran down Chrissy's spine, the weight of an unsettling presence dropping in the pit of her stomach. The air around her seemed charged with an intangible tension, creating a palpable unease that echoed through the depths of her being. The dragon, its eyes filled with an intelligence that transcended the mortal realm, seemed to smirk in that disturbing moment, leaving Chrissy with an indescribable sense of foreboding.

Miles away, the trio traversed the landscape, unfolding before them with each step drawing them deeper into the heart of the forest. The gentle ambiance surrounded, creating a sense of connection with
