Hysterical Strength-The extraordinary display of super human strength - Kevin B DiBacco

    Introduction

    Hysterical Strength

Hysterical strength refers to displays of extreme strength by humans, beyond what is believed to be normal, during periods of severe stress, fear or panic. Though anecdotal evidence of hysterical strength has existed for centuries, the phenomenon has remained unstudied by science and no verifiable scientific theory to explain it has been widely accepted. Despite a lack of scientific support, many extraordinary tales of hysterical strength persist in popular media and imagination.

    Defining Hysterical Strength

Hysterical strength is most often witnessed in life-or-death situations, when people are confronted with extreme circumstances that elicit an extraordinary fight-or-flight response. Though rare, there are countless anecdotal reports of humans lifting extremely heavy objects, breaking through barriers, and fighting off attackers with seemingly superhuman strength when faced with mortal danger or while trying to protect loved ones. The feats of strength go well beyond what the person is normally capable of.

Hysterical strength is widely believed to be temporary, with witnesses describing people immediately collapsing or being unable to repeat the superhuman feats after the initial burst. It is also difficult to measure or scientifically analyze hysterical strength given the dangerous, chaotic situations under which it occurs. There are ethical barriers to purposefully inducing severe panic or perception of mortal threat in order to study a resulting fight-or-flight response.

    Potential Explanations

Without verifiable, rigorous scientific analysis of hysterical strength, potential explanations remain theoretical. One popular theory is that in life-or-death situations, the body may activate more muscle fibers than normal, allowing people to use nearly all their muscles at once and exceed strength capabilities.

Others point to documented cases of mothers lifting vehicles or debris off trapped children and suggest that love or drive to protect loved ones could also unlock deeper strength reserves. Increased adrenaline and stress hormones are also cited as chemical triggers that could reduce pain, generate more energy to muscles, or lessen self-imposed limits on strength exertion during emergency situations.

Some experts theorize that rather than increased strength, hysterical strength situations demonstrate people pushing themselves to normal muscle limits while ignoring risks like muscle damage or physical exhaustion. Without regard for personal safety, humans can exert more strength than they normally would for short bursts.

    Examples and Anecdotal Tales

While scientific understanding lags, breathtaking stories of hysterical strength persist. Though unverified, many retellings reinforce the idea that profound fear or determination can unlock amazing human strength:

    • In 2006, Ivujivik, Quebec resident Lydia Angiyou saved her 7-year-old son from attack by a polar bear by repeatedly punching the bear until it fled. She was unarmed and suffered only minor injuries while confronting the massive predator.

    • During the Cold War in 1982, Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into a bridge over the icy Potomac River in Washington D.C. As the plane sank, with temperatures below freezing, flight attendant Kelly Duncan pushed open a galley door with one hand, against inrushing floodwaters, and helped multiple passengers escape from the back of the plane. No one knew she was strong enough to open the heavy door by herself until that moment.

    • In 1895, a report from Scientific American described a horrific logging accident in Wisconsin. After a tree fell on his partner, a lumberjack named Eliezar Rose lifted the massive tree
