Welcome
This isn’t your typical leadership book; it’s a discussion between you and me — human leaders who want to become even better leaders of other humans and ourselves.
I’m Melissa Majors, your friend — with coaching benefits. I’m thrilled you decided to read this book. It’s written like a conversation we would have as if we were chatting in a one-on-one coaching session. As your coach, I share performance-accelerating tactics on how to embrace our humanity and detoxify unintentionally toxic workplaces. As your friend, I coach with compassion, understanding, and encouragement, not shame or judgment for yourself or your colleagues.
My guidance is based on 20+ years of practical experience leading and coaching happy and high-performing diverse groups of humans, some of my favorite leadership experts, and relevant data from a few of the world’s leading research firms. Blend that with my unfair advantage as a coach, shaped by countless learning experiences I’ve developed throughout my career as an educational service professional. I know how to close the gap between actual and desired performance.
I humbly acknowledge that helping others thrive and boost their performance is a natural gift I possess — for which I am deeply grateful. Let me be clear: I do not have all the answers to every leadership challenge you face. I am not omniscient; I’m only human—a human who knows how to lead humans and bring the best out in them.
Throughout this discussion, I’ll lead you on a journey to discover solutions from within your mind and perspective. That’s what great coaches do. They don’t spoon-feed you the answers; they help you reflect on how you think, feel, and behave. As your coach, I’ll set the context with relatable stories and data, then ask well-placed questions that spark introspection and action.
My style is intentionally non-threatening. So please feel completely safe on this journey of enlightenment and growth. We can talk about hard stuff without making the conversation hard. Get ready for a lighthearted, non-judgmental, yet relevant and actionable discussion. Change is hard enough, so let’s have fun while doing it!
We read global reports about engagement and leadership trends, but do we see ourselves in the results? Most of us tend to believe that the data applies to someone else and think, I’m not who they’re talking about.
Introspection is hard. Psychologist Jeremy Dean, PhD, founder and author of PsyBlog, says,
Modern psychologists have discovered that the stories we weave about our mental processes are logically appealing but fatally flawed more often than we’d like to think. The gulf between how we think our minds work, as accessed through introspection, and how they actually work is sometimes so huge it’s laughable.
Friend, as we mindfully examine our leadership impact, we’ll likely recognize situations and behaviors that led to unintentionally toxic workplaces. Please do not shame yourself as you deepen your awareness. Instead, note the contrast between what you did versus what you’ll do differently in the future.
I’ve learned much more from my failures than my successes. Let’s choose to gain wisdom from our missteps rather than shame ourselves. Let’s be grateful for self-awareness as it informs and motivates us to become even better leaders.
If we remain unaware, we can’t improve. Self-awareness is a gift; embrace it without shame.
Throughout this book, I’ll prompt you to journal your thoughts. I encourage you to pause, ponder, and answer the questions. Doing so will improve comprehension and increase the likelihood that you’ll remember and apply your new-found knowledge when needed. Sure, you can simply read the book and then stick it on a shelf, but you risk forgetting profound insights and capitalizing on your motivation to try things differently. You have too much potential not to tap into your own wisdom, friend.
