REASON FOR WRITING THIS BOOK
Something got me thinking recently – I was out in the Sinai desert on a chilly night, wearing two down jackets and still cold. My tour guides were huddled around the crackling fire, dressed in thin cotton dresses and cheap Chinese jackets. They didn’t appear to be cold despite their lack of quality clothing. This got me thinking about human resilience, or rather, lack of. Our Western lives have become ridiculously complicated and we are increasingly detached from our fundamental senses of sight, smell, touch and feel. Technology and creature comforts have improved
our lives – turning us into soft cupcakes – and also led to a profound shift in our relationship with the physical world. Our diminished human resilience is a consequence of comfort and disconnection. We need to reclaim a balanced, sensory rich existence. We need to harden up. Permit me to have a rant.
It is for the express purpose of answering and clarifying the above questions and many others of a similar nature that motivated me to write this book. You will find that the language of this book is that used in your daily papers, current periodicals, in your business offices, in your home and in your daily workshop. I urge you to read this book and apply the techniques outlined therein; and as you do.
One of the Universal Laws of Success is the Law of Service
and it says:
Your rewards in life will be in direct proportion to the value of your service to others. The more you work, study, and develop your ability to contribute more to the lives and well-being of others, the better life you will have in all areas.
True happiness and fulfillment come when you feel that you are making a valuable contribution to your world.

CHAPTER 1
WHY SCREEN-GREEN TIME MATTERS
We're made to connect. And technology makes it easy to do so. But what happens when our connections consume, rather than contribute to our well being?
Screens are consuming an increasing amount of our lives, and it’s important to disconnect to reconnect. When we disconnect from devices, screens, phones - anything that’s begging for our attention and we reconnect with real people, conversations and experiences like hiking, we start to see a shift and become more engaged and present in our lives.
Screen to Green: Disconnect from Technology and Reconnect to Nature
is a powerful mantra that resonates with people in their personal lives. In a professional context, people often find themselves buried in a digital avalanche of emails, meetings, and constant connectivity.
The always-on
culture can lead to burnout, decreased productivity, and strained work-life balance. By consciously disconnecting from the digital world, employees can find the space and time to reconnect with their inner selves. This reconnection can lead to increased creativity, improved decision-making, and enhanced job satisfaction.
For individuals in their personal lives, the concept of Screen to Green is equally significant. The allure of smartphones, social media, and digital entertainment can sometimes hinder our ability to engage fully with loved ones, nature, or our own thoughts.
Intentional breaks from screens deepen our appreciation for the world and our own emotions. By disconnecting from screen, we cultivate profound connections and strengthen relationships.
Our growing disconnection from nature, Green
In an era of unprecedented technological advancement, we find ourselves standing at the crossroads of progress and well-being. The impact of technology on our lives is undeniable, offering us incredible opportunities for growth, connection, and innovation. Yet, we must also recognize the challenges that arise from this digital revolution and the importance of finding harmony amidst the chaos.
The digital landscape has transformed the way we live, work, and interacts with one another. It has given us access to vast amounts of information, connected us across borders, and accelerated our ability to create and collaborate. However, as the lines between our online and offline lives blur, we must critically examine the consequences of this transformation.
While technology has undoubtedly brought immense benefits, it has also led to concerns about our well-being. The constant bombardment of information, the pressure to stay connected 24/7, and the addictive nature of digital platforms have taken a toll on our mental health and overall quality of life. We find ourselves grappling with a digital dilemma – how do we embrace progress while safeguarding our well-being?
To find out how the human relation to nature has changed over time, we asked ourselves:
How can we define and measure all the various ways in which people connect with nature? How can we count all the times people stop to watch a sunset or listen to birds chirping, or how long they spend walking tree-lined streets?
We could certainly ask these questions to living people, but we couldn’t ask people who lived a hundred years ago.
Instead, we turned to the cultural products they created. Works of popular culture, we reasoned, should reflect the extent to which nature occupies our collective consciousness. If novelists, songwriters, or filmmakers have fewer encounters with nature these days than before, or if these encounters make less of an impression on them, or if they don’t expect their audiences to respond to it, nature should feature less frequently in their works.
We created a list of 186 nature-related words belonging to four categories: general words related to nature (e.g., autumn, cloud, lake, moonlight), names of flowers (e.g., bluebell, edelweiss, foxglove, rose), names of trees (e.g., cedar, laburnum, whitebeam, willow), and names of birds (e.g., finch, hummingbird, meadowlark, spoonbill).
Next, we checked how frequently these 186 words appeared in works of popular culture over time, including English fiction books written between 1901 and 2000, songs listed as the top 100 between 1950 and 2011, and storylines of movies made between 1930 and 2014.
Across millions of fiction books, thousands of songs, and hundreds of thousands of movie and documentary storylines, our analyses revealed a clear and consistent trend: Nature features significantly less in popular culture today than it did in the first half of the 20th century, with a steady decline after the 1950s. For every three nature-related words in the popular songs of the 1950s, for example, there is only slightly more than one 50 years later.
A look at some of the hit titles from 1957 makes clear how things have changed
