Fall in Love With Money - Marta Skik Harich

    INTRODUCTION

BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

Before beginning anything in life we must ask ourselves why are we doing this? To what end will we be utilizing our finite resources of Time, Talent, and Treasure? What are we willing to give up today to reach the future goal we are aiming for? What does achieving my goal look like? During my life and career, I have found that not enough thought goes into these questions. We can avoid so many mistakes, appreciate our current circumstances more, and capitalize on more opportunities if we only pause and ask ourselves the question: How do I clearly envision my outcome?

I have seen so many individuals miss the mark because they did not take the time to ask themselves this very question. At face value this question looks benign, however it poses many challenges if one is not able to dissect it. Let’s explore what this question really means. As children we can imagine that anything is possible, we can imagine being anything we want to be: an astronaut, a firefighter, a teacher, a super-hero, a doctor, a builder. At that age our minds do not have limits because we were either not exposed to or had few experiences with limiting factors, limiting beliefs, failure, or criticism. Our minds as children are quite malleable and can be formed to imagine that anything is possible. As you ask yourself these important questions you will need to access this childlike state of mind where you believe and can imagine anything is possible. Once you can see it in your own mind, you can create it in real life.

Anything that we set out to do we must first visualize. For example, I want a red Ferrari. I can picture it in my mind, see myself driving it down the highway, I can hear the engine, I can feel my hair being tossed in the wind, I can feel the wind on my face, I can also feel the clutch and the leather steering wheel. I can clearly picture myself driving it. Next, we must take this process a step further: imagine not just the moment you are driving the car, but also exploring all the senses. I can see myself pulling up in my driveway, I park the car in my garage, I can still smell the new leather smell, I run my hand over the intricate stitching of my seat and feel how smooth it is. I hear the loud engine before I turn off the car in my garage. I can still taste the Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake ice-cream bar my parents bought me from the ice-cream truck when I was seven years old. As I opened my ice-cream treat, I heard a loud noise and saw it whiz by me for the first time: the red Ferrari. I knew at that point this was a car I wanted to have when I grow up!

Do you see what I did here? I engaged all my senses to imagine the red Ferrari which triggered an emotional response and a true desire to make sure I accomplish this goal. I could see my goal like a detailed movie. I saw the end in my mind. As you read this workbook let yourself imagine the possibilities. Do not let your current circumstances dictate how you will behave, and what you can and cannot achieve.

Actual Success versus Symbol of Success

Do I have a red Ferrari yet? As of the publication date of this workbook, no, not yet. Could I purchase one if I wanted today? Yes, I could. Will I purchase one today? No, I will not, because I practice the principles in this workbook. If I purchased one right now, I would be paying myself a HUGE self-imposed penalty—see Chapter 7 for details. I am not yet completely financially free, but I am working to that end! Let us pause for a moment to differentiate between actual success and a visual representation of success.

Here I am imagining my red Ferrari, and here you are perhaps judging me and thinking I am being vain or materialistic. It is important to provide additional clarity here between what motivates us and what we truly want to accomplish. The red Ferrari itself is not what I want to accomplish in life. The red Ferrari is just my symbol of success. To me, it represents financial independence and wealth. It is what I want to treat myself with, guilt-free, as I accomplish my dreams. Its image keeps me motivated and encouraged as I work towards financial freedom. I know there will be a moment in time when I can just write a check, without blinking an eye, without feeling the pain, without guilt, and without fear that this huge financial decision could potentially have a negative impact on other aspects of my life. In the meantime, I am following my own formula in this workbook.

To me, financial freedom means being able to meet all our financial obligations, needs, pay our success forward, have ample financial reserves, have no debt, provide to those in need, align with our divine purpose, and be able to splurge on something guilt-free as we celebrate our success. Financial freedom should not negatively impact your goals, dreams, family, divine purpose, and lifestyle. Your definition of financial freedom might be different, but either way, your definition is what you have set out to
