Introduction
Did you know that success is a mind game? Well, take a look at what is happening around you. There are so many people with extraordinary talents, gifts, skills, and passion. But are they all successful? Not really!
You may be thinking, but what is the reason behind this?
There are so many people out there who have all it takes to win the game of life but are not. You could be one of these people, with the right skills for success, but then have no idea how you are going to pay all your bills at the end of the month!
One thing that you have to understand is that your extraordinary talents, gifts, skills, and passion are just a small part of the whole game plan. The larger percentage is all about finetuning your mindset for success.
So, what is a success mindset?
In the world of today, having a success mindset is critical. It is through a success mindset that you get a strong sense of flexibility to seeing so many possibilities around you and taking the necessary steps to seize them. This can be anywhere from sports, academia, business, research, and entertainment, among other fields.
The point is, what sets successful people apart is their ability to make things happen irrespective of what the odds say. What is interesting is that most of the world’s successful people are the ones with a difficult upbringing who, no matter what their surroundings said, were able to rise above and beyond all odds to make amazing things out of themselves. If you look around you, you will see that friend, colleague, or neighbor that has managed to fight all circumstances and obstacles to secure the success they are enjoying today. The common thing among them is what we call the success mindset.
Three major aspects define the success mindset - growth mindset, an inward-looking propensity, and positive possibilities.
Growth mindset: this simply refers to one’s ability to believe that they can become better with time and more practice. You have to realize that when you have a fixed mindset, you will tend to think that there are certain aspects of your skills and personality that you cannot change and cannot improve beyond what they currently are. However, you have control over your life, and you can get out of your comfort zone by stretching your skillsets and personality.
Having a growth mindset means that you believe you can improve your skills and intelligence with practice and study. It believes that every failure is an opportunity for you to grow and that effort and attitude are great determinants of our abilities and success. It will push you to try new things, face challenges, and get constructive feedback that will help you grow.
In a growth mindset, threatenings are excited rather than threatening. So, rather than thinking, oh, I'm going to reveal my weaknesses, you say, wow, here's a chance to grow.
~ Carol Dweck
An inward-looking propensity: this simply refers to your ability to look deeply into yourself. If you are not self-aware, then it is highly likely that you will not attain success. The secret is for you to ensure that you are pointing fingers at yourself, whether in good or bad situations. This is not for self-blame or bringing you down. However, it is meant to help you figure out ways you can do things better so that you can improve.
Some of the most important questions that will help you look inwards include:
What is the lesson I learn from this situation?
Is this helping me to grow?
Is there something that I could have done differently to make things better?
When you ask these questions, you will constantly be looking for ways to do better, be better, and move forward in the path of success.
Positive possibilities: this is not to be confused with blind optimism. It does not mean that you should believe that you can do everything by yourself! For instance, if you are 5'5'' in height, you can believe that you can slam dunk. However, it does not mean that you can do it. But, when you start realizing the positive possibility of improving your shot, then you will work at it one step at a time so that you can eventually become a better shooter.
In other words, this is about having a strong belief that positive change is possible when we take actions that steer us towards making things happen. In the same way, for you to have a positive mindset, you have to be willing to practice a success mindset as much as you can until it is ingrained in you and comes naturally.
If you strongly believe that you can change your outlook, then you first have to take a good look at yourself so that you can figure out all the steps you can take to adopting a positive mindset that steers you in the direction of success. If you are a salesperson, for example, you can start by setting goals and listening to what your clients want. You may find it useful to adapt scripts, do more follow-ups, and work more on your listening and communication skills. Whatever it is, you have to believe that it is possible for you to get better and then give yourself adequate time to change, grow your skills and dedication to improve.
Part 1: Success Mindset
~ In theory and practice ~
Chapter 1
~ How you can recognize your mindset ~
Changing your mindset is not easy. However, it is one of the most powerful things you can ever experience. The very first step to changing your mindset is first learning how to recognize a negative mindset. Once you can do that, then you will have the empowerment to effect the changes so that you can seek a positive outlook to life.
Here are some of the signs that will help you recognize a negative mindset:
Constantly focusing on what is wrong
It is so easy for us to fixate on the things that worry us and our disappointments that we miss out on the things that are working out for us. Well, if this is what you find yourself constantly doing, then you know that your mindset has been contaminated with negative thinking.
The truth is, life brings both good and bad things. However, despite all the bad stuff happening around you, there is always something that is in good shape, and that is what you should focus on more. Take time to be grateful for these things. When you do that, you are in effect, helping your mind stay focused on breaking through the bad things so that it does not cloud your judgment and block you from progressing. If you turn a blind eye on the good stuff, there is a high likelihood that you may lose them. Therefore, focus on the good so that you can use them to your advantage and see possibilities of making the bad better in the future.
Mourning your failures and missing out on celebrating little victories
This is a sign that is very much related to what we have discussed above. The question that you have to ask yourself is what do I find myself doing whenever I suffer a loss?
Well, for most people, losing something gets them so angry that they do not appreciate the small victories that they have. This is often a sign that deep within your conscious and subconscious mind, you do not believe that you can be a victor. You simply believe that you are destined to fail.
William Boetcker once said, The difficulties and struggles of today are but the price we must pay for the accomplishments and victories of tomorrow.
Start by appreciating both your struggles and victories for what they are. It is through your struggles that you get an opportunity to grow. Focusing on the negatives rather than the positives is just a way of telling your mind that the victory is just but a future failure waiting to happen. Well, this is not the best way to live your life because you will not only miss out on the precious little gifts life has to offer but also cursing your luck, ingenuity, and achievements.
Do not take anything for granted. Celebrate small victories and embrace struggles because they are there to make you learn something so that you can handle what lies ahead of you, hence steering you towards the path of success.
Failing to face the truth
It is one thing to be self-aware, but it is quite another to keep complaining about reality. You can complain all day about the rain clouds, but that will not bring the sun out! The truth is, you can only change the things within your control and accept those that you cannot control.
When you relentlessly complain,
