About this ebook

The poetry in Shadows Among Mist represent two sides of the same coin. In the centre of that coin are traces of a search for hope in the obscurity. There can be light, and there can be darkness at the same time. Living in harmony with all of those things is easier said than done.

With the addition of ten new poems for its tenth anniversary, the expanded edition of Shadows Among Mist explores themes of life, love, deception, and happiness.

Shadows Among Mist - Ashley Newton

    MYSTERY

    I am a circle until I break

Until the fragmentary light tears through me

With a plea to be boundless

    I am my own mystery

    To wander through mistakes

Through everything I don’t know I am meant to be

    With enough valour to stand

    I am my own mystery

    My heaving breaths correlate

Breaths that fight against unknown dreams

    With one whisper I search

    I am my own mystery

    I should travel again

Travel somewhere far enough to reach the deep

With my heart’s confines left to grasp

    I am my own mystery

Until I search I will never know

    The secrets of my destiny

With no clues but those of life

    I am my own mystery

    WELL-PRACTICED LIARS

    No one cares

    For the truth of anything

    They just want to see

    The way we’re all pretending

    If you close your lips

    And shut your eyes

    You’ll soon discover

How we learn to live among the lies

    No one believes you

    No one ever will

    Because your pain is exciting;

Nothing more than a cheap thrill

They say it was not real

    Such things have never occurred

Yet all those people are not real

It’s from the lies, I’m sure

We are built to be liars

But we are also born to speak

The two go hand in hand

It’s what makes us all weak

    The truth keeps stirring

Like a hidden realm in our flesh

Somehow we are taken by the lies

They prevent us from being our best

Even the best are born to lie

Though they say their words are true

But we are all well-practiced liars

    Even you

    HANDS

    The sorrow you hold

    in such small hands

    only seems to grow

    among those who can

    A slit in the eye

    helps you see the world

    with such thoughts in mind

    as your life is blurred

    But when we are gone

    some voices may sing,

some might say we did not belong

and some will say other things

    Coffins dipped in white

    one coffin in black:

    for those free of
