    Chapter One

The sun felt comfortingly warm on Tim’s skin as he reclined in the folding beach chair, he put down the book he had been reading. The view was just too distracting. He didn’t mind being distracted and he had to remind himself it was more than a view, he was living it, breathing it, taking in the atmosphere. The sky was bright, brilliant blue, contrasting sharply with the stark white of the snow capped mountains, and below this a carpet of deep dark pines which glowed emerald in the direct sun and deep dark green in the shade. The lake itself was deep dark and cool. Then he saw above him an eagle swooping and whirling effortlessly, carefree in the high firmament. Every so often as the great eagle adjusted its position the sun would glint off its broad form sand illuminate it as if lit by a spotlight. The wind blew gently on Tim’s face because it was a warm wind, but every now and then as the wind direction shifted so it was blowing over the mountains there was a slight snowy coolness to the air. Tim placed one foot into the water and instantly felt its syrupy smoothness and coolness enveloping his foot. Then he threw himself forwards into the dark water with a triumphant splash, the water surging up around him, the still surface of the water broken and rent apart. Then he felt the water close around him like a soft silky cocoon enveloping and surrounding him on every side, bearing him up softy and supporting him. Immediately his overheated body became refreshingly cool, then he lifted his arms and propelled himself forward feeling the water gliding past his skin, breaking the glistening trail of the sun upon the water. Holding his nose he dipped right under, feeling the water soak his hair and cool his head and face, finally he remerged, breaking the surface once again to gaze upon the distant peaks and the twirling majestic eagle. It was a moment of pure joy and exhilaration. It was a joy to be alive, to be living and breathing. It seemed as if the whole universe was exploding with joy. For a moment all his problems had sloughed away and he was experiencing every vital moment. In that moment he felt fully alive. After his short swim Tim stood with his feet flat on the lake bottom, for he had positioned himself carefully so that the cooling water reached his neck. He breathed in deeply and glanced once more at the white mountain peaks, the trees and the brilliant blue sky. The eagle was out of sight now, patrolling some other patch of sky. It was the pregnant, joy filled exuberant silence of nature, a silence that was full and inhabited, thickly laden with life and vigour. Then the silence was abruptly broken. A couple was making their way down to one of the small sandy lakeside beaches and Tim could hear them long before he finally saw them. They were talking loudly and animatedly, sentences filled with talk of work, property and money. Tim immediately became irritated and angry. How dare they desecrate such a holy place? How could they arrive at somewhere so beautiful and chose to chunter on about inanities? Then Tim noticed a small sign close to where they were sitting and reminded himself that it was a provincial park. He relented, the couple had every right to be there, it wasn’t just there for him, it was a beauty that could be shared and experienced. Perhaps what they needed most was to escape to somewhere beautiful like this and let their cares simply slip away. Tim’s hopes quickly began to fade, the couple’s conversation didn’t subside, it only intensified. The couple may have been physically in the back of beyond but their hearts and minds seemed to be still in the city. They began to lay out their things in an ostentatious manner as if marking out their corner, their property, staking out their claim. Then more noise, first the loud mechanical noise of the pump inflating the small boat and then the annoying bang as they set each item down noisily. Then he saw it, horror of horrors, a sound system. Why on earth could people not simply enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, why did they have to bring noise with them? Wasn’t the city noisy enough? Don’t people want to get away from all that? Or maybe people simply did not know what to do with the silence. It was then
