    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    FOREWORD

Social media allows us to connect with people in our industry better than anytime in the past. As a stock trader, I find X (formerly Twitter) to be a very valuable resource. To learn new strategies and ideas, I follow a number of successful traders, including Jerremy Newsome (@newsomenuggets). I follow a lot of traders on X, but Jerremy is different. Not only is he a good trader, he is unrelentingly positive, always posting something inspirational and uplifting. Because there are always ups and downs in trading, I find Jerremy’s posts to be very refreshing, especially when I’m on a cold streak.

In 2018, I was heading to Nashville. Knowing Jerremy was from there, I reached out to him to see if he was free for lunch. I sent him a DM on X, and he responded almost instantaneously with an enthusiastic, YES my man!! We exchanged numbers and agreed to meet. A few minutes after making the lunch arrangements, I got a text from Jerremy, This is going to be incredible!! I didn’t know if he was referring to the food at the restaurant or if he was really that excited for our meeting. Not knowing how to respond, I just said, For sure.

The next day, another text from Jerremy, I’m so excited, this meeting is going to be phenomenal. The text made me smile and chuckle. I’m the one who reached out to him, but he was more excited than me!

One last text message, the morning of our meeting, This is going to be stupendous! After googling the word stupendous, I thought to myself, He may be setting the bar a little bit too high for this meeting. I texted him back, Looking forward to it.

When he entered the restaurant, he walked over and gave me a huge hug like he had known me his whole life. That’s who Jerremy is. When he does something, he’s all in, giving 110 percent even to a simple lunch meeting with a person he’s never met.

We sat down and started talking about stocks that we liked, but the conversation quickly turned toward stock charts. I like charts and have always respected technical analysis, but it has never been the focus of my trading. So when Jerremy mentioned charts, I thought to myself, Here we go, another retail trader selling me on the next head and shoulders or cup and handle pattern. But Jerremy approached them in a whole different way. He talked about day traders being trapped and needing to cover. He was looking at failed breakouts. He was actually going against many traditional technical strategies that you would read in a textbook. I was intrigued. Go on, I said.

He discussed pattern recognition and identifying opportunities on both the long and the short side. Most traders on X are long only (meaning they don’t play the short side, or, if they do, it’s by buying puts—not outright shorting stocks). I quickly realized that I was in the company of one of the most sophisticated traders that I had ever met. And he was coming up with these strategies and conclusions by looking at simple candlestick patterns! I picked his brain for another thirty minutes, and we wrapped up lunch with another hug. I’ve been good friends with him ever since.

After knowing Jerremy for the past five years, I can tell you that he has a very unique style of trading. He looks at candlestick charts in a simple but elegant way, which allows him to profit in all market conditions, not just bull markets. You will find many of these trading strategies in the second half of this book.

Jerremy has a deep understanding of trader psychology, which allows him to effectively coach and mentor new and struggling traders. Trading is all about confidence. The most successful traders know how to control their emotions to minimize their mental damage during losing streaks and maximize their potential gains when trading is going well. A confident trader doesn’t hesitate. They strike quickly when they identify the setup they are looking for, and they exit quickly when the trade is not working out.

This brings me to the number one reason Jerremy has been successful in this industry—his focus on discipline. Discipline is the key to any successful trading strategy. If you cut your winners too short or hold onto your losers too long, you are doomed to fail.

Jerremy has developed a system of risk management called the R system. It allows traders to quantify the risk and reward on every trade before ever making the trade. This way, they don’t overtrade and only take the cleanest setups. If you swing at every pitch, you’re bound to strike out.

The best traders find a way to keep their trading strategies fresh and simple. They have a firm understanding of the core principles and know how to keep their emotions in check. If you’re new to trading or struggling to find your edge, this book will be a valuable resource for identifying and developing your own trading edge. The key is to give 110 percent like Jerremy does, and you’ll have the best chance of finding success. Good luck, and enjoy learning from one of the best.
