How to Analyze People With Dark Psychology - Joshua Johnson

    INTRODUCTION

Growing up, I was fascinated by television shows and movies that showed FBI agents solving crimes and thwarting terrorists. My ambition was to become a profiler, tracking serial killers in the field. It seemed a glamorous job, flying around the country and making spectacular busts. I wanted to be one of those people who righted the wrongs in the world, seeking justice as a preeminent crime fighter.

After completing a bachelor's degree in psychology, I went on to study for a postgraduate degree, specializing in forensic psychology.

I gained some post-college work experience. I knew that the FBI preferred candidates who had prior work experience, so as soon as I graduated with a master’s degree, I went looking for a job. I found one at a company where I was tasked with doing background investigations.

I knew that the FBI preferred applicants who had already cultivated investigative skills, so I threw myself into the job, gaining as much practical experience as I could.

After a few years, I felt that I was ready. I started the application process to join the Bureau. This involved getting both security and medical clearance. Luckily, I was a fitness fanatic from a young age, so when it came to the physical fitness tests, I passed with flying colors after having taken a few dry runs. I also passed the drug and polygraph tests.

New Agent Training was probably the toughest 20 weeks of my life. Luckily, I quickly became close friends with my classmates and looked up to my class supervisors, counselors, and instructors, who challenged me in ways I had never been challenged before. It was a truly uplifting experience, but my training was far from over. My ultimate aim was to work at Quantico in Virginia. This is where the National Center for Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVAC) is based. I wanted to work in the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) as a supervisory special agent. You may know this post as that of a ‘profiler,’ a term the FBI does not use.

Supervisory special agents are highly trained and must pass the nine phases of the application process. They use their knowledge of criminal psychology and the experience they have in solving crimes, to lead investigations that take place in conjunction with other government organizations and law enforcement agencies. It took 15 years before I could even apply to serve in the BAU. Once I found myself in this unit, my responsibility was to use research and evidence to analyze and investigate criminal behavior.

When you investigate a serial killer, you need extensive knowledge about the darker side of human nature. Not only that, but you also have to take into account historical evidence and use technical analysis tools so that you can explain and predict what a serial criminal will do next. Violent behavior of an individual criminal usually follows a certain pattern, and it takes expert interviewing skills when you deal with suspects, witnesses, and others who work in the industry. You can only draw conclusions about criminal activities when you have experience in the field. You also need to be able to analyze data and look at all the possible probabilities.

Working in the BAU meant spending 50-plus hours at work every week, sometimes on-call 24 hours per day. There is nothing glamorous about the work, not even close to how it is portrayed in popular entertainment. You spend hours in front of a computer screen. Crime scenes are very difficult places, and it takes a very specific mental and physical strength to stomach what you sometimes have to deal with.

There is a common misconception that an FBI profiler gets ‘vibes’ or sometimes has psychic flashes of inspiration when attending a crime scene. This is very far removed from the truth and only happens in movies and on television shows. Solving violent crimes and apprehending the perpetrators needs a level head, inductive and deductive reasoning, experience when it comes to solving crimes, and a thorough knowledge of how criminals behave.

I no longer work for the FBI. After many years of dedicated service, I have moved on to the corporate world, using my extensive knowledge about human behavior in sales and consulting. Make no mistake: The world is full of people who want to manipulate, control, and take advantage of us mere mortals. There are evil people out there; people who have severe mental afflictions; people who are out only for themselves. They are everywhere, from governments to corporate boardrooms, from friendship circles to loved ones in intimate relationships.

My aim in writing this book is to provide an introduction to what in popular culture is referred to as dark psychology. I want to help you to start getting some insights on how people can control, take advantage, and hurt others, as well as give you some ideas on how to protect yourself or extricate yourself from abusive situations and relationships.

In this book, I will introduce you to the Dark Tetrad, a constellation of personality traits that includes narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism. We will investigate the way in which people communicate using verbal and non-verbal methods and look at the difference between manipulation and persuasion. How can you tell when someone is lying? How do you know when you are being deceived? We will answer some of the basic questions about these issues.

More importantly, we will look at various ways in which you can protect yourself from dangerous personalities, using emotional intelligence and understanding Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Ultimately, this book is about finding your own self-respect and standing your ground when confronted by people whose sole aim is to hurt you or take advantage of you in some way.

I will do my best to keep it easy to understand and hopefully prompt you to do your own research in areas that intrigue you the most. The human mind is a fascinating field of study, and you will be well-advised to find out more once you have finished reading this book.

    WELCOME TO THE DARK SIDE

    Light and Dark

Every one of us has two sides, what we may call a ‘light’ side and a ‘dark’ side. We live in peace together, and there is harmony among neighbors. Then one day, madness erupts and what was once unity turns into resentment, maliciousness, and venom. People who were deemed to be decent now scream and shout, burn down buildings, and call for the extermination of the enemy. Hatred flares up and becomes all-consuming. Suddenly, the whole neighborhood is set alight, and all hell has broken loose.

We look at nature and reflect on the cruelty of it all, but who can be more cruel than a human being? The Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky famously explored the darkness that is present in the human soul, writing, People talk sometimes of a bestial cruelty, but that’s a great injustice and insult to the beasts; a beast can never be so cruel as a man, so artistically cruel (Dostoyevsky, 1952).

The most horrendous of acts can be committed by seemingly ordinary people. Think of the man who transported millions of people to their deaths in Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War. For him, what he did seemed so ordinary. At the trial of Adolph Eichmann, Hannah Arendt said,

I was struck by the manifest shallowness in the doer which made it impossible to trace the uncontestable evil of his deeds to any deeper level of roots or motives. The deeds were monstrous, but the doer—at least the very effective one now on trial—was quite ordinary, commonplace, and neither demonic nor monstrous. (Burns, 2021)

Sometimes people think they are doing something good, only to end up committing heinous acts. There is a proverb that says, The road to hell is paved by good intentions. It means that it is not enough to have the intention of doing good, it has to be followed by actions that are good.

Luckily, most of us have a conscience that tells us what the right thing is to do in a certain situation. We have freedom of choice, so we can choose to follow our conscience or choose to override it. Perhaps we are lazy or selfish and end up making the wrong choices, and then we have to live with the consequences of our actions.

In Eastern philosophy, there is the concept of yin-yang. It represents two complementary forces that make up every aspect and phenomena that can be encountered in life. The symbol that represents yin-yang is a circle made up of light and dark halves. Perhaps our souls are like this, one half light and the other dark. It is up to us to stay in the light as much as possible and find a space of harmony between these opposing forces.

There have been some famous experiments that clearly illustrated how easy it is for anyone to move from light to darkness. The most famous of these is probably the Stanford experiment of 1971. Professor Zimbardo randomly divided a group of students who volunteered to take part into two groups. One group played the role of prisoners, while the second group portrayed the prison guards.
