    Foreword

This is an immensely important book that brings us back to the very basic truths that have been forgotten in our day and age, and yet without the basics there is such a great missing dimension in the kingdom of God. Jesus’ coming to earth displayed in word and deed that service was core in the kingdom of God. The book you hold in your hands takes you back to the cardinal lessons of servanthood.

As it has been said ‘the way up is the way down’. Our world is experiencing untold chaos and confusion, not to mention breakdown and splits in churches, because the lessons of servanthood have been forgotten and discarded. We live in a world that has been engulfed with the spirit of competition, a spirit of ‘who is who’, which has snuffed out the servanthood spirit we see in the scriptures.

The spirit of competition cannot be allowed to continue unchecked. We have in our world today too many chiefs and few Indians. The Author of the book you are holding in your hand lays out the qualities you look out for in a servant and the price of servanthood. I am a firm believer in that the wind of change is blowing across countries and continents and whereas we have seen everyone wanting to be boss and big, we have a generation that realizes that to get to the top, you have to get to the bottom in service.

Daniel Wabala is a prolific writer.  He writes and communicates his message with clarity. His clarion call back to service is timely and needs to be heard around the world. Daniel’s message will propel the church back to power and effectiveness. We need this message today, not only because it is right, but also because it is the bible thing to do.

My prayer is that once you have read this book you will be propelled to a servanthood that will be emulated by many and get us together to start a fire that will not be quenched by the waters of competition, self and materialism.

Open your heart and mind as Daniel takes you from the posture of ‘bossfulness’ to a posture of servanthood. You and I are about to reveal Gods kingdom all over the land. The true followers of Christ are servants.

    Introduction

This book is about serving. All of us have a noble duty of serving, despite our positions in life rank, or even titles. We all have been placed on this planet to serve a certain generation.

While the church leaders are divided in their opinions about business leadership principles in the church, some feel that because of the similarity between some business leadership principles and church leadership principles then there is no harm in applying them. Other church leaders also feel that using secular business principles removes the spiritual distinctions from the church’s work and reduces it to business.

The controversy is that emphasis on church leaders using business leadership principles has culminated in most recent Christian leadership discussions focusing on skill rather than on character.

Without taking sides in this debate I feel a solemn call to rediscover the leadership style of Jesus Christ which is servanthood. On a light note, it is quite clear that most business leadership models tend to focus on personality more than on character, which in turn also tends to emphasize on skill. According to my theory, skill facilitates productivity while character ensures sustainability.

Lately it is being realized in the corporate world that in the 21st century bureaucracy can’t work any more. Unlike in the past generation, it has been recognized that the human factor is the most important of all factors of production. Humans have to be handled with great care by a manager who should be a connoisseur in the field of servanthood.

As much as skill is very important in the life of any leader, I tend to believe that character is most fundamental especially in the life of a Christian leader. And that is what has propelled me to spend some time and prepare these essentials for servant leaders that I hope you will find interesting!

    CHAPTER 1

    Pearl of Servanthood

From a school teacher in a standard seven class hinting out facts and dictating notes on the Second World War to his students, to a grand businessman who is placing his incentives on a notice board that is close to his big business and even extending to a manager in a textile factory, competition suffuses every aspect of our lives. Every one is looking for a raison d'être or a secret key to success that will ensure he is a step ahead of his colleagues, peers, and even snooping relatives. There is no doubt that there is a deep craving in most people today for some thing that will thrust them to a more elevated level of life. Most people have their eyes on success and majority will do anything to achieve it. Otherwise what would we attribute on the great sale of most literature on success in the market today?

The enthusiasm and zeal people are exuding to soaring into great heights is incomprehensible. It is undoubtedly the core of most people’s hard work, sleepless nights and numerous sacrifices. I am almost compelled to think that people from every race, color, culture and religion are becoming more and more obsessed with this issue. And truly success is quite an excellent idea; no one wants to associate with a failure.

There are many ways of reaching a mountaintop. Certainly, one can even think up his own machinery to throw him there, use a parachute or an aircraft. But there remains one certain way of getting there: I believe that the only sure way of reaching the mountain top with certainty is by climbing the mountain step by step through a gradual process.

Correspondingly in our quest to success, there are numerous channels through which we can find ourselves there: one can decide to use a short cut of employing thuggery, sorcery, or manipulation or another can decide to step over other peoples’ heads and still get there. There are so many people today who believe in outsmarting others,
