This book is dedicated to my dad, who instilled in me an admiration for the beauty of the Telugu and Sanskrit languages at an early age.

Ancient wisdom says that to accomplish anything, one needs God’s grace and energy in three dimensions – the desire or will to do something, the knowledge as to what and how to do it, and the ability to do it. These are termed Iccha Shakti, Gyana Shakti, and Kriya Shakti in Sanskrit. I am grateful for the early exposure to Telugu literature both at home and in school. The appreciation for this literature resulted in a desire to bring some of the works to a larger audience around the world. In terms of what and how to do, it seemed appropriate to pick one of the most popular poetic works, which is not delegated to scholarly pursuits, but which is commonplace in collective cultural memory.
