Jade Miller

Jade Miller was born in east Tennessee. She is a survivor of ritual abuse and human trafficking, peer support worker, trauma recovery support group facilitator and author. Jade has been writing since she was a young child, illustrating her own stories and winning writing awards in elementary school all the way through high school. She studied writing and editing in college, and made her publishing debut with the first Dear Little Ones book in 2015. Two additional Dear Little Ones books followed, as well as an ebook on attachment theory. Her books have been translated into several languages and have received international attention and praise from trauma survivors and therapists. She is also working on her first novel and a memoir. Jade believes that the idea of one single cohesive "personality" is mostly a social construct. She suspects that universal multiplicity is much more likely-the concept that every person is a collection of self-states, and their upbringing and life experiences determine the level of awareness and cooperation between those self-states. Jade is a peer support worker to people who identify as multiple or plural and/or have Dissociative Identity Disorder. She also offers education for mental health professionals drawing from her lived experiences and a private social media group for other multiples. Learn more about working with her one on one at www.peersupportformultiples.com. Jade's blog can be found at www.thoughtsfromj8.com. Quench your thirst here! In a world full of gurus telling you what to do from an ivory tower, Making Lemonade is a refreshing, pragmatic and relatable guide. "There aren’t many books that make you smile and nod in agreement from the first page, but this one does. In this book Jade Miller shares her wonderful insights, quirky sense of humour and creative activities that encourage you gently, kindly and compassionately to use all the magnificent lemons we get given, to help us make better sense of the absurdities we call life.

No one is perfect, thank goodness. We are all unique, fallible and prone to stuffing things up in spectacular fashion. Jade reminds us, this is OK. It doesn’t matter one jot what diagnosis you have been given or have given yourself. What really matters is working out what your preferences and strengths are so you can use them wisely, your priorities to avoid getting sucked down the plughole of life’s complexities and your thinking patterns that can set you up to believe everything is S.H.I.T when in reality it’s merely another asteroid belt of big juicy lemons that will make the best tasting lemonade ever."

Jade’s way of talking is funny and light, but when she gets deep, it’s like a switch flips. She makes you think and gives you things to do that really hit you in the feels. And her drawings? They’re like the icing on the cake, making the whole journey into Jade’s world both smart and smile-worthy.

    Introduction

Have you ever felt like life didn’t really turn out how you thought it would? Like an ‘expectations vs reality’ meme, but it’s not on the internet, you’re living it. Existence threw you a mixed bag of lollies… or more like a mixed bag of sour citrus. Good times, accompanied by those nasty lows, new scenarios to deal with every week, sometimes really big and challenging events. Has it left you wondering how to make sense of it all? Yeah, me too.

This book is for anyone who’s ever faced the paradoxes of life, sought meaning amidst the chaos, connection in isolation, and laughter in unexpected places. It’s a book about making the best out of this crazy life, through understanding ourselves, building connection and finding meaning in the absurdity. Lemons all around? Well, all we can do is get about making that lemonade.

You’ll also notice some song lyrics around the place. I’ve created a Spotify Playlist called ‘Making Lemonade with Jade Miller’. If you search for it, you can listen along while you’re reading.

Many moons ago I was sitting at a reception desk for my receptionist job - working full time for a record label. All day I greeted musicians and music industry people, while doing mundane admin-type tasks, but I loved it. Three evenings a week I was hosting a rock music TV show, curating playlists of up-and-coming bands, as well as older rock favourites. Most evenings I was going to gigs and partying. In many ways I was living my best life, in other ways it was a totally destructive period (free tickets to any gig I wanted was a dangerous perk). Anyhow, as I tapped away doing my work, not long before my 23rd birthday, it occurred to me that maybe one day I would write a book. I didn’t know what on earth I thought I’d write about at 22, dismissed as quickly as it appeared, it joined a vault of ‘impossible dreams’ in my mind. But life, as it does, moved forward in unpredictable ways.

Fast forward, a lot of things happened in between then and now. One day, in the height of illness at age 38, it all just started pouring out of me. All the things I’d endured, all the things I was waking up to, all the things I’d learned just tumbled out onto pages.

Somewhere amongst the oodles of raw words, that memory re-occurred to me, and I realised that maybe I would actually write the book. I have grappled with my ingrained low self-worth, come and gone from this project several times through the last few years, but finally it’s done. I bloody well did it. A bit for me, but mostly for you. You, the one who tussles with life, manages way more than your plate can hold, and figures there is more to existence than the daily hum drum. It’s for you, resilient but a bit tired, disconnected yet attached, in malaise yet hopeful. (OK, this is really for me too.)

I don’t really know how this has happened. I’m a working single mum with chronic health issues and a terrible phone addiction. But I am a spicy-brained woman with autism and ADHD, so I do have that benefit of hyperfocus. I’ve spent weekends and nights pulling words out of my soul, agonising over design, wondering if any of it is worth it. But if just one person can feel seen, accepted, and inspired reading these rough and ready chapters, then I’ll be happy.

I’ve had a constant internal voice named Janice through this process, who keeps reminding me that there are plenty of books in the world, loads of self-help guides, a lot of Instagram inspiration, and why would I want to add more noise? She constantly questioned the value of adding my voice to the crowded space of self-help narratives. Who am I to write a book? Well, I guess it emerged from those spontaneous outpourings, a commitment to perseverance, a challenge to my own self-doubt, and a celebration of the unique lens through which my neurodivergence allows me to view the world.

If you’re holding this in your hand right now, I want to say THANK YOU. I hope you make it past the first section.

Really though, I do hope that you find something that you can relate to. I hope that you discover something new about yourself as you ponder the stories, tools and creative activities.

I hope you agree, question and disagree with things in here.

I hope you can laugh at my quirky sense of humour.

I hope you embrace creativity in your life.

I hope you find more connection and purpose.

I hope you tell someone about it.

    The world!

It’s a lot. But there is still space for love, healing and compassion. And that’s ultimately what this book is for.

An antidote to our collective existential crisis. A guide to finding connection in our hard times. A way to uncover personal purpose.

Now that I’ve set you all up for rainbows and ice cream, I need to tell you the flavour you’ll get here isn’t always super sweet. Because is life? I’m an optimistic nihilist, seeing the beauty in the darkness, and the darkness in existence.

I’ve had my fair share of lemons, some of which have been completely outside my control. For example, there was this house I lived in that had a huntsman spider plague. I’m not remotely kidding. As an arachnophobe, it was literally living a nightmare. It started off with one or two, quite large hairy spiders visit the apartment. Not unusual in Queensland. Not my favourite thing, but understandable. It turned
