About the Author
THIN AIR
ONE
Ledgerman's heart rate spikes, the adrenaline that always hits when he first reads the watch's notification—the time when the countdown begins, where the effectiveness of his next six, or twenty-three, or sixty-seven minutes takes on the utmost importance.
Ledgerman stands, forgetting to duck his tall, thick frame. Smashing his head on the luggage compartment (which these days inexplicably can hardly hold any actual pieces of luggage) in the process. A new pain shooting through the base of his brain, joining the more profuse but widespread neck pain he experienced from sleeping crack-necked for the first five hours of the flight.
In his haste to stand, Ledgerman knocks the overhead light on above his seat. An accident, one that temporarily blinds him, leaving a residue of lighted spots floating around his eyes. He fumbles back to turn the lights off. Something much easier said than done.
Excuse me,
someone says from the row of seats in front of him, cringing and pulling away from Ledgerman's general direction. He knows himself to be an intimidating figure at times—often one look can be all it takes to convince a person their sudden concern is no longer relevant.
Sorry ma'am,
he says back, holding up a hand in a small show of peace.
She turns away from him with a look of either bitter disdain or quiet disgust. Either one perfectly fine with Ledgerman, so long as he doesn't have to deal with her anymore. He doesn't mind fraternizing with the general public, as he calls them. But once his watch vibrates, it becomes an operational hazard for him to do so.
Ledgerman is not a clumsy man. He is actually frighteningly precise with his physical movements. A fact that many who have been caught in his preordained path came to find out the hard way.
But there is something about the past few minutes that's turned him into one, apparently. And
