The moon was a perfect crescent in the darkening sky as Ronny’s bruised and battered fist reached for the doorknob to the four-story walkup apartment at 22 Langsford Ave. He hesitated, his hand shaking, the black and blue all over his bare knuckles yellowed beneath the flickering, ancient light that had clung to the top of the doorway for as long as Ronny had been alive.

The front stoop was unchanged, all the same oddly scrawled names lining the apartment’s callbox, each family name etched on the curled, once-white paper strips slid beneath the yellowing plastic cover. Most of the names, just like Ronny’s family’s name, had been there for years. And seemed as likely to be there for years to come as any other eventuality Ronny could figure.
