About this ebook

Chen lives a life of drudgery in London with her mother and dreams of life with more freedom. She gets her wish when she becomes a cook on a pirateer ship. What she finds is treachery at every turn, the challenge of learning about life on a pirate ship, and learning to cook and defend herself, fast. But, if she can get her hands on Captain Flint's treasure, her worries would be over.

This story is based on some characters created by Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. In his book, it refers to Captain Flint and his crew having sailed the seas, but we never know the story. I've created that backstory, as well as added Chen, a woman who becomes a pirate. She's based on an amalgam of the real pirate women that sailed the seas for freedom and treasure.

Captain Flint's Crew - Sonja Dewing

    INTRODUCTION

This story is based on some characters created by Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. In his book, it refers to Captain Flint and his crew having sailed the seas, but we never knew the story. I’ve created that backstory, as well as added Chen, a young woman who becomes a pirate. She’s based on an amalgam of the real pirate women that sailed the seas for freedom and treasure.

Iwent down to the docks, my only activity in the early morning that got me away from my boring life. Where the rest of London was still waking up, here it was teeming with activity. Fishermen just coming in with their first load, a ship docking with passengers waiting to enter London, and merchant ships either loading or unloading. But it was one ship in particular that drew me to it.

Could they be privateers? No one dared run the Jolly Roger at the docks, even if they were working for the king, but they had that way about them. The men were chanting as they unloaded. The colors of their outfits and the things that were unloaded for sale were always food for my dreams.

The captain was standing on the deck of the Shadow Serpent and giving orders. His bright red coat in contrast to the dark blue of the sailors on the military boats or so many passengers debarking from the other ships in their dingy greys.

The next thing I knew I was on the ground on my knees. My hands had stopped my face from smashing into the grit of the dock. The push had come from my backside.

    Look! It’s little miss pigtails.

I rolled away from the voice and jumped up, mad at letting my excitement get away from me. I knew better than to let anyone get close, especially one of the snotty girls from the local etiquette school.

The girl, surrounded by her friends, reached out to tug on my black hair that I had tied back on both sides. I smacked her hand away.

She gasped. You can’t touch me like that! I’ll tell the magistrate. You and your mother will be in jail, little Chinese girl!

I worried if that were true, but I wasn’t going to back down now. No one was going to touch my hair. I put up my hands as my father had taught me to fend for myself.

What’s going on here then? Ladies, brawling in the streets. What has London become now? A voice broke through.

We all turned to stare at the ship’s
