Mini-Game – Rooks Versus King
It’s time to explain to the kids the rules of the game and demonstrate how to move two of the more basic chess pieces. The goal is to capture the enemy
King! Even though there are still just a few pieces in this game,
by the conclusion of the chapter, kids will have learned how to play two of the six chess pieces and will know what it feels like to yell CHECKMATE!
They’ll feel as though they’ve already defeated their parents.

The King
Your chess set’s kings most likely resemble the ones pictured above. Diagrams have been simplified to only display his crown.
Ask the children to arrange the Kings on the board so that they are facing each other as follows:
To begin with, take note of how the board is flipped so that the square in the lower right corner is white. To ensure that the child turns the board the correct way before beginning, have them chant white to the right
since each player’s bottom right tile is white from their perspective. Turn the board so that the letters on the white side of the board read a
through h
from left to right if your board includes letters like the ones above along one edge.
Take note of how the Kings begin on the same vertical line, exactly opposite one another. Files
is the term for the vertical lines. This one with the Kings on it is known as the e-file.
The King should begin on the color square opposite him to ensure you have the board assembled correctly.
