The Bucket List
Nobody’s ever seen a mermaid,
said Nia’s mom, except perhaps in the movies.
Why not?
asked Nia, looking intently up into her mom’s face.
They were sitting at the kitchen table, looking out of the window, and across the harbor at the rolling blue waves of the Atlantic.
Their house, a small white cottage was built on a cliff, overlooking a pretty bay, on the west coast of Ireland.
Her mom often said they were lucky to have such a lovely home. It had been built by her father, Nia’s grandpa, who had once lived there happily with his family. That was a long time before Nia was born. When Nia knew her grandpa, he had been an old man, and he had adored his little granddaughter. It was Nia’s grandpa who had taught her to love the sea, and they had been constant companions right up to the day he died.
Why hasn’t anybody seen a mermaid?
asked Nia again.
‘Well, because mermaids aren’t real,
replied her mom.
But if no one’s seen them, how do they know they aren’t real?
Nia replied.
Hmm, good question
her mom replied, slowly nodding her head, I guess you better keep your eyes open this summer. Maybe you’ll be the first to spot one.
Nia was thoughtful for a moment.
"Well, I hope I do see a mermaid someday, and if I do, I’m
