Can I afford it? Yes, I can. Why can I afford it? Because it was sold at a fraction of its original price. Where did I find it? In a charity shop. ‘Oh no, you didn’t.’ ‘Oh yes, I did.’ Would you like to see some of my other purchases? I bet you would.
I have a wardrobe full of expensive clothes. How is this possible? Because of how I shop and where I shop. I buy only good quality and I am prepared to ‘personalise’ clothes if necessary. I wear them, I tire of them, I discard them. No, I don’t, certainly not, I keep them. I take them out of my wardrobe and I ‘box’ them. Eventually, they will become vintage garments and be even more desirable.
My other purchases from charity shops include books, lamps, crockery, crystal glasses, casserole dishes, pots and pans, fashion accessories, shoes and objets d’art as well as several pieces of furniture. Welcome to my world.
I would be delighted to give you a glimpse of some of my purchases past and present. Show you some of my old favourites that were replaced by something better. They suffered the indignity of exiting the wardrobe and entering the realm of the plastic boxes where conditions are cramped and outings are few. I may even give some former favourites, now banished to the boxes, another twirl, another opportunity to impress.
Clothes are superficial and not to be taken too seriously or have too much money lavished on them. Perhaps that is true and yet I know what an evaluative society we live in and how influential clothes can be in our lives and in our careers. Visual literacy is a very sophisticated art form and what we wear is indicative of who we are and the path we have chosen in life so I think clothes need to be taken seriously because they are very influential. If we are to be successful, we need to ‘dress to impress’.
If you don’t believe me, wear a green cardigan or jumper similar in colour to that worn by students at Cheltenham Ladies College. For maximum impact, wear it in Cheltenham and observe the effects.
It’s only an experiment! I’m certainly not suggesting that you pretend to be something that you’re not, but, like the old school tie, I am saying that clothes have power. Your appearance will influence how people perceive you. They will make instant value judgements based entirely on those first impressions so the clothes you choose to wear, their cut, their colour and the accessories worn with them are
