Mohammad Amin Sheikho

Mohammad Amin Sheikho (1890-1964 A.D / 1308-1384 A.H)Early YearsM. Amin Sheikho was born in al-Ward district in Sarouja Quarter, one of the historical districts of Damascus, in Syria which was called mini-Istanbul during the period of the Ottoman rule. He was raised in an Arab style house situated opposite the famous public al-Ward Bathhouse. This house stands there to the present day.M. Amin Sheikho was still young when his father, the merchant Ismael Sheikho, departed this world. Mohammad Saleem, the only and elder brother of Mohammad Amin, was assigned as a director of the Military School during the Ottoman rule.EducationAt the age of twelve the boy who was to become the great scholar was enrolled at al-Rashidiya School, he then went on to complete his studies in Amber, the Royal Ottoman Faculty in Damascus. He received many certificates of praise and commendation during the Ottoman rule and then under the reign of King Faisal in Syria. There are many copies of these certificates still preserved in trustworthy hands.AchievementsDuring the period of the Turkish rule, he was head of many police-stations in Damascus and its dependent counties. He was a shining example to all for his unfailing attention to duty, the vitality with which he approached every task, and the high level of achievement in many varied deeds which were of great benefit to mankind.During the French mandate he was appointed a director of the prisons of the citadel of Damascus. When the great Syrian uprising took place against the French forces, he helped the revolutionaries in every conceivable way until they placed the seal of the revolution in his trustworthy hands. Due to his subversive activities he fell foul of the French governor of Syria resulting in an order being issued for his execution; but the Almighty God saved him. During this period he was compliant in many attempts to overthrow French rule.He was the companion of Sheikh Amin Kuftaro for almost twenty years and following his death M. Amin Sheikho followed his footsteps and became the next in succession to guide and teach the disciples of the eminent sheikh. His assemblies were distinguished by the profound level of wisdom with which he imparted his teaching and guidance. He took great care to draw the attention of his followers to beware of the tales of the Israelites which defame the biography of the noble persons, the Envoys of God (pth), and of anything ascribed to them which conflicts their perfection and impeccability. In 1953, the famous coeval philosopher, Sir John Godolphin Bennett came from Britain to visit him. He remained in his company for three weeks that were filled with lengthy dialogues about the religion of Islam and its actuality.Sir John asked M. Amin Sheikho many questions about the exact definition of the ‘spirit’ and the difference between that and the ‘soul’, as well as asking for clarification about Godly Justice, a topic which he found difficult to comprehend. As a result of this visit, Sir John practised Islamic legislation and performed the prayers along with the followers of the scholar. This visit was referred to briefly in the autobiography of Sir John Bennett in his book Witness; but after his death, a book containing special personal recollections written by Sir John was published in 1975 under the title Journeys in Islamic Countries, wherein he spoke in detail about this meeting. In this book he gave a detailed account of the personality and character of M. Amin Sheikho, and of his lectures and disciples. He also mentioned the great benefits he had derived from his life-changing meeting with him.During his lectures M. Amin Mohammad Amin Sheikho pointed frequently to the belief in the return of Jesus Christ (pth), from the Islamic perspective. He also indicated the near advent of this significant world event as, according to his explanations, most of the conditions for this momentous Hour had been fulfilled. This was disclosed in his book: The Envoy of Peace Looms on the Horizon: the Return of Jesus Christ. In referring to his meeting with M. Amin Sheikho, Sir John made mention of this issue in his two books: Witness and Journeys in Islamic Countries.Professor Abdul-Kadir John, alias al-Dayrani, published the book Stories of M. Amin Sheikho wherein he writes in detail about many deeds performed by his teacher, Mohammad Amin Sheikho. One of His PupilsProfessor Abdul-Kadir John, alias al-Dayrani is the best known and most distinguished among the pupils of M. Amin Sheikho. He received a certificate of General Education (a Syrian certificate which included the study of nine different sciences). Prof. al-Dayrani collected and verified more than fifty books which were dictated by M. Amin Sheikho and written on his behalf. Therefore his name is always mentioned in association with the name of Mohammad Amin Sheikho.PublicationsM. Amin Sheikho dictated to his pupils many books about Islam in the Arabic language, some of which have been translated into English and French. The following are just some of these:1- Interpretation of the Great Qur’an (Lights of Descending & Realities of Meaning)2- Interpretation of Am’ma Section of the Qur’an3- Impeccability of Prophets4- Am’ma Encyclopedia (The Compassionate’s Gifts in Interpreting the Qur’an)5- Al-Amin Interpretation of the Great Qur’an (The Previous Nations)6- Visiting the Prophet (cpth) and the Effect of His Love in Elevating the Believing Spirit7- High Grades of Al-Taqwa (Seeing by Al’lah’s Light)—The Jewels of Rules in Explaining the Pillars of Islam8- The Sources of Spring Water in the World9- The Reality of Our Master Mohammad (cpth) Appearing in the Twentieth Century10- Proclaiming God’s Love (The Scientific and Qur’anic Motivations for Halal Slaughter)11- Islam... Specifically he spoke of Tamerlane the famous conqueror who is known to be a blood-thirsty warrior conqueror in the Middle East, while Asian peoples revere him and regard him as a holy man who had spread the religion of Islam in their countries. In this respect, a book was issued by M. Amin Sheikho under the title: The Reality of Tamerlane the Great.Mohammad Amin Sheikho and CuppingThe name of Mohammad Amin Sheikho is always referred to whenever ‘cupping’ is mentioned, for it is he who disclosed its correct rules. Following the death of M. Amin Sheikho his pupil, Prof. Abdul-Kadir al-Dayrani undertook scientific research about this operation with the participation of a large medical team composed of many professors and doctors specialised in various medical ailments. When the results of the analysis of the blood extracted by the cupping operation were declared and many patients were healed completely after being cupped, the procedure soon spread widely and had a wide following in many societies. The results were published in many magazines and journals, and as a result, many medical people began to apply the procedure according to the exact and correct conditions that had been laid down.Mohammad Amin Sheikho and the reason for Mentioning the Name of Al’lah over a CarcassHe emphasised the necessity of mentioning Al’lah’s Name aloud over animals as they are being slaughtered, for when they hear Al’lah’s Name their meat becomes pure and free of any microbes.Prof. al-Dayrani also subjected the ideas of his teacher, M. Amin Sheikho, in this field, to a scientific study. A great number of doctors and university professors carried out scientific research, the like of which had never been attempted before. They took many samples of the meat of cattle, some of which were slaughtered while mentioning Al’lah’s Name aloud over them, while others were slaughtered without the benefit of this blessing. A comparative analysis of the outcome was then carried out. The results of this study were also published in a book issued on behalf of M. Amin Sheikho, entitled, Proclaiming God’s Love (The Scientific and Qur’anic Motivations for Halal Slaughter.Mrs. Salma Estwani, the BBC correspondent in Syria at that time, announced the scientific results of this study and interviewed the doctors and researchers who carried it out. Also, after revealing these results, many signboards were posted in Damascus streets on which it was written, ‘How terrible! Is it true that we Syrians eat microbes through our food?’ And on the front of the citadel of Damascus, a large sign was displayed on which was printed: ‘The Great Syrian Humane Scholar Mohammad Amin Sheikho.’

The most important thing for you as ‎a creature is to know your Creator the Almighty God and ‎communicate with Him. Preface‎

It is clear for any thinker and researcher that the ‎Holy Qur'an gives the spirit a great importance through ‎addressing the spirit itself repeatedly and informing ‎mankind about it and its affairs in details in so many ‎Fortresses2; the Holy Qur'an clarifies the reason of its ‎existence, the secret of its essence, the way of achieving ‎its happiness and of being guided, the Holy Qur'an also ‎illustrates how to remove all the difficulties from its way ‎to the Almighty Al’lah and consequently to have Godly ‎purification and all the superior humane moralities, ‎virtues and qualities, and exhorts and warns it from the ‎way which leads it to distress and misery.

We can say that ‎the Holy Qur'an is the Divine addressing to the human ‎spirit, the Holy Qur'an with its entire great content is the ‎Godly Law and System which was sent down to be the ‎Constitution of the human spirit to be safe and exalted in ‎this life and in the life to come.‎

Many researchers and philosophers from different ‎religions were searching through ages to find out what the ‎spirit is, How to define it idiomatically, Where the centre ‎of its existence is, What its function is, What the ‎reflection of its deeds on itself or on the universe around ‎it is?‎

As now, we aren’t seeking to correct those studies ‎and conceptions because it takes long time and haven’t ‎any benefit or importance for the students themselves. ‎Such dispute could reduce the focus of students and affect ‎negatively their minds, therefore they would be astray. ‎

Alternatively, the importance of this book is to set ‎the main rules of psychology; what the reality of the ‎spirit is, Where the centre of its existence is, What its ‎function is… and many other facts of the spirit. All that ‎are illustrated and investigated throughout the knowledge ‎of the Holy Qur'an, some practical examples and real ‎stories.‎

Through this book we try to build a true and constant ‎basic knowledge for the student, where he can be able to ‎debate or to discuss by himself any research that he faces, ‎to repel what is wrong and take what is right.‎

Therefore, we will start our lessons with the spirit, ‎its source, the centre of its existence, the wisdom of its ‎being created and everything attached to it including the ‎large human society in which it lives. In the end we ‎mention some orders and rules set by the Almighty God ‎to this spirit in order to live a happy and blissful life.‎

We expect that you will put all your efforts and your ‎hard work, and we hope you get the success and the ‎prosperity…‎

Checked and Introduced by the Researcher and Thinker

    Prof. A. K. John Alias Al-Dayrani

Lesson One - ‎The Nature of the Human Spirit‎

What Is the Spirit? Where Is the Centre of Its ‎Existence? What Is Its Function?

‎God has created each human to be composed of three ‎elements a body, a soul and a spirit, to have knowledge of ‎each one of these elements we will start in our lesson ‎with the human spirit study as it has the greatest ‎importance because it is the main creature in this creation ‎and this existence of this worldly life.‎

    What Is the Spirit? ‎

The definition of the human spirit: As for the spirit, ‎it is the subtle consciousness of human. It is a Godly light ‎and its centre is in the chest. Its rays spread to all parts of ‎the body through the nerves. This spirit, confined to the ‎body, is aware of its surroundings through the five senses. ‎It sees with the eye, hears with the ear, smells with the ‎nose, feels and touches with the skin and tastes flavours ‎with the tongue, which is also used to express ideas and ‎thoughts.‎

In more detail: we say that if one stands by the sea ‎shore, undoubtedly, from watching the sea, his awareness ‎will make him revere and glorify it. This submission and ‎glorification comes from the ‘spirit’.‎

If we see someone dear to us whose hand is bleeding ‎because it is badly wounded, we feel sorry for him, and ‎sympathize with him. This pain and grief also comes ‎from the ‘spirit’. ‎

If we hear that one of our dear relatives has returned ‎safely from a long journey, we feel pleased and happy to ‎know this. These feelings of pleasure and happiness are ‎possible because of the ‘spirit’. Thus, the spirit is the ‎essential component of man. It glorifies and submits, ‎grieves, annoys, delights, rejoices, feels contentment and ‎anger, tastes, enjoys and suffers. It is the centre of our ‎existence.‎

The spirit is always addressed in the Qur'an. God ‎says: O (thou) spirit, in (complete) rest and ‎satisfaction (with this world)!

    The Holy Qur'an,

    Fortress (89) Al-Fajr (The Coming ‎Appearance), verse (27).‎

It is charged to follow the straight path. God ‎says: (Behold) the spirit, and (wonder about) the ‎evenness given to it so that its wrong and its right were ‎inspired to it. Truly, he succeeds that purifies it, and ‎he fails that corrupts it!

    The Holy Qur'an,

    Fortress (91) Ash-Shams (The ‎Sun), verse (7-10).‎

The spirit tastes the taste of death, but this taste ‎differs from one spirit to another according to its state ‎when leaving the body. God says: Every spirit shall ‎have a taste of death: in the end to Us shall ye be ‎brought back.

    The Holy Qur'an,

    Fortress (29) Al-’Ankabut (The ‎Spider), verse (57).‎

The sinful spirit receives painful treatment on ‎doomsday in order to be cured. God says: Lest a spirit ‎should (then) say:‎‎ Ah! Woe is me! In that I neglected to be near to ‎God, and was but among those who mocked!

    The Holy Qur'an,

    Fortress (39) Az-Zumar(The ‎Groups), verse (56).‎

The spirit enjoys staying in paradise, and does not ‎like to be removed there from. God says: … therein ‎shall ye have all that your spirits shall desire…

    The Holy Qur'an,

    Fortress (41) Fussilat (Explained), ‎verse (31).

It is called a ‘spirit’ which is derived in Arabic from ‎the words ‘magnificent-value’.‎

What is the source of this spirit? Why did the ‎Almighty God create it with this magnificent universe for ‎its benefits?‎

    The Source of the Spirit:‎

The Almighty God was alone nothing with him, no ‎earth or sky, no day or night, no time or place, no human ‎or animal, no angels or Jinns and He is the first without ‎any beginning, whatever you say He is the first of all the ‎beginnings and nothing before him, He is the Greater and ‎the Grandeur, whatever you say He is Greater, He is ‎greater and greater and whatever you say He is Grandeur ‎He is Grandeur and Grandeur more than your ‎imagination, there are no limits or ends to His Grandeur, ‎He is the last of everything and nothing after Him, the ‎Almighty God says: "He is the Firs (nothing is before Him) ‎and the Last (nothing is after Him), The Most High ‎‎(nothing is above Him), and the Most Near (nothing is ‎nearer than Him). And He is the All-knower of ‎everything"‎

    The Holy Qur'an

    Fortress (57) Al-Hadid (The Iron), verse (3)

The Almighty God is the source of Generosity and ‎Favor, Mercy, Sympathy and Graces, Grandeur, prettiness ‎and Benevolence with all His supreme Names that ‎indicate the supreme perfection, therefore the Almighty ‎God Wants to create the creations in order to acquaint ‎them with His supreme Names to make them witness the ‎Godly prettiness and Benevolence and feel pleasure with ‎His graces and His divine perfection.‎

God says in a holy saying:

‎"I was a hidden treasure, and I desired to be ‎known, and so I created creation and acquainted them ‎with Me, so that they knew Me through Me".‎

In describing the meaning of this holy saying I say ‎that this "treasure is a thing that is both beautiful and ‎valuable. In the saying, the meaning is that the great ‎Godly Beauty and the supreme perfection were hidden", ‎and unknown to anyone.‎

The phrase "I desired to be known" is in reference ‎to the generosity and kindness of the Almighty God. It ‎was the aim of the most generous (Al’lah) to manifest ‎and display his generosity and kindness.‎

‎"I created creation" refers to the enjoyment of ‎watching the Godly Beauty, and becoming engrossed in ‎watching its endless Perfection. It indicates that God ‎created creation in a world called ‘al-Azal’, the pre-‎existent world.‎

‎"I acquainted them with Me": I showed them My ‎Greatness, and My Benevolence to them in creating them.‎

‎"They knew Me through Me": By looking at ‎themselves they could know Him, and following this, ‎they enjoyed watching this glorious treasure as they ‎looked upon a part of His beauty and perfection.‎

When creation was first brought into existence by ‎Almighty God in that world known as al-Azal, the pre-‎existent world, it was made up of abstract spirits without ‎shapes or bodies. This includes man, animals, the sky, the ‎earth, and the angels and jinns (ghost-like demons).‎

That is to say, all creation was then of a single kind ‎and quality without any differences existing among them. ‎All these spirits enjoyed watching the glorious treasure ‎and were very fond of seeing the great Godly Beauty.‎‎ (The greatest pleasure of Paradise is gazing at ‎God.)

    ‎Questions:‎

‎‎1- Define the Spirit and why is it called ‘Spirit’?‎

‎‎2- What is the practical benefit that the five senses ‎offer to the spirit?‎

‎‎3- Why does the Almighty God always address the ‎Spirit in the Holy Qur'an?‎

‎‎4- Why did the Almighty God call that subtle ‎consciousness a ‘spirit’ and what is the ‎denotation of its name?‎

‎‎5- What is intended by the word ‘treasure’ in the ‎Holy God Saying?‎

‎Lesson Two‎ - The Cause of Human Coming to This World

The Godly Justice and the Equality of Creatures in ‎al-Azal World

In al-Azal world, the pre-material world, when God ‎first created creatures; they had been mere spirits far ‎from shapes and bodies. Man and animals, the earth, ‎Angels and jinns; you can say all creatures were on that ‎day of one kind and quality. There was no difference ‎among them. All these spirits had enjoyed witnessing that ‎treasure at that time and were infatuated with love and ‎eagerness at witnessing that Grand Godly Beauty.‎

‎The Cause of Human Coming to This World

Remaining at one degree of witnessing Godly Beauty ‎the creatures would later feel bored of their state ‎whatever high it is. To have complete kindness and ‎enjoyment, they must be elevated in that witnessing from ‎a degree to a higher one endlessly. To clarify this we say:

If a man sits in a very beautiful orchard and stays there ‎for a long time, he will undoubtedly be bored of it and he ‎will no more see its beauty. To have this pleasure ‎continued, he should move to a more beautiful orchard ‎than his.‎

The creature cannot elevate in witnessing the Godly ‎Beauty from a state to a higher one unless he has done ‎good deeds, which make him sure that his God is satisfied ‎with him. Such deeds will be as stairs through which he ‎gets nearer to God.

Therefore, God offered all these ‎spirits an exodus from the world in which they have ‎nothing to do, to a world where they have good deeds ‎which help them come nearer to their Creator in order to ‎seek that Glorious Treasure, to drink continuously and ‎endlessly from the seas of Beauty and Perfection.‎

‎The Effect of Good Deeds on the Elevation of the ‎Spirit and Its Attainment of Closeness to Its Creator:

To show the effect of these good deeds on the ‎Spirit’s elevation and its attainment of closeness to its ‎Creator, we give the following example. Let us imagine a ‎commander fighting a battle with his soldiers. When they ‎come back after the battle, will all the soldiers be in the ‎same psychic and spiritual state? Undoubtedly, they will ‎be at different levels. The braver soldiers who have done ‎well and have sacrificed a lot will come back feeling ‎themselves nearer to their commander, having a higher ‎status and enjoying a greater share of spiritual wellbeing ‎than the others.‎

This example applies to the sons and their fathers, ‎the students and their teachers, the disciples and their ‎guide, and those who are obedient to their Creator.‎

One of the firm rules of the spirit is that it cannot ‎approach its Creator unless it has a good deed upon which ‎it can depend, and the greater the sacrifice and the good ‎deeds are, the closer it will allow its approach to become.‎

This is why the Almighty God made this world an ‎abode of deeds and a path to the other world where the ‎heavens and rivers are in a condition of truth before an ‎Omnipotent King‏.‏

After we clarified the effects of the good deeds on ‎the spirit to be as essential elements for happiness and ‎heavens and a cause for its perfection and ‎exaltation… therefore we must mention another ‎important thing which is the yearning in the human spirit.‎

Why the Almighty God put that yearning in our ‎spirit?‎

‎The Effect of Yearning in Generating Deeds and ‎Giving Them Their Values. ‎

Having explained the value of deeds as being the ‎bases of happiness and enjoyment; we should deal with ‎another point; that is yearning without which the creature ‎does not start the deed and rush to it. Yearning makes the ‎creature go ahead to deed willingly and seek it happily. ‎Without this yearning the creature would not have any ‎wish for seeking any of the deeds and furthermore, he ‎should stay still and motionless finding no taste nor ‎pleasure and would not taste a flavor of happiness.

So, yearning is the stimulus through which taste and ‎happiness are achieved. It gives the action a value without ‎which the deed is valueless in the eye of the doer. The ‎more the thing is attractive and desirable to the spirit, the ‎more valuable the sacrifice will be, and the more effect it ‎has on the spirit. If a man does not like money or does not ‎yearn for it, then charity will have no meaning and he ‎does not find a spiritual rising or zeal for spending it. The ‎same case applies to aversion of one’s gaze and ‎abstinence from doing the forbidden things. If the spirit ‎did not like women, chastity and aversion of
