    Rod brought his load of laundry into the bedroom. Brenda was already in her pink nightie, which might have been enough to make him drop the load of laundry to take up a different pursuit, except she was clipping her toenails.

    In bed.

    Again.

    Rod almost said something. Almost started the fight they’d already had twice this month, even though it would have put the kybosh on pink-nightie activities for the rest of the week. Instead, he saw a possibility.

    This might have been the best possible time to tell her about his day.

    Rod dumped the load of tee shirts on the bed, and started sorting sports shirts from metal band shirts. As he checked the wear on his old Type O Negative concert tee, he started speaking in the most bored tones he could manage.

    New neighbor at the end of the block.

    Yeah, Brenda said, sending a snip of big toenail high into the air before it landed on their good purple sheets. Saw the moving van. D’you check it out?

    Yep. Rod decided the shirt was still in good shape – at least as good as the old Star Wars shirt he was wearing with his baggy gray sweats – so he whipped it through a quick triple fold, and laid it on top on a gray Monster Magnet shirt. Vampires.

    What type? Snip. Another clipping leapt through the air.

    "Well, vampire really." Rod folded three Timbers Army shirts in quick succession, cursing the fates that she cut right to the one question he didn’t want to answer. How did she always do that?

    Rod cleared his throat, and tried to evade the question.

    "Just the one. Figured we could handle
