One look was all I needed, to know my wife was trying to kill me.
Up until that moment, it had been a perfect anniversary. Three years of what I’d thought of as wedded bliss.
Janice and I had met on a base jumping run through New York City. Entirely illegal, of course, but that was half the fun. Setting up to jump off of bridges, buildings, even the gargoyle at the corner of a big Brooklyn cathedral.
We were thrill seekers. Both of us born to money. Both of us bored with the money management that took up more of our time that we liked.
We seemed like a match made in heaven.
Engaged in six weeks. Married in six months. A whirlwind life of adventures together.
Then came the day of our third wedding anniversary. We’d had big plans. Renting a yacht out of Hawaii, one complete with its own submarine. Plans for deep sea diving and exploring. A whole week of fun and activities with all our friends, out on the ocean.
And Janice and I were to kick off the festivities on our own. Up before dawn to make love on the beach, followed by a breakfast of crepes, strawberries and mimosas. Then, while our friends were still asleep in their in hotel rooms on the big island, Janice and I boarded a prop plane, and flew an hour west to a spot where the trade winds were warm and could carry a ‘chute a good five miles.
Spectacular view of the ocean on the way down, kissed by the rising sun. Speedboat following along from the point of the jump, ready to pick us up, and bring us back in time to greet our guests.
A perfect plan. And I believed it was both our plans. Right up until the moment I jumped from the plane, alone.
Janice didn’t jump with me.
I turned back to the plane. There she stood in her orange jumpsuit. Framed in the doorway. Parachute pack on the deck beside her. Helmet dangling in one hand. Her luxurious ash blond locks bound tight into braids behind her head.
I couldn’t see her eyes. Not clearly. I knew they were blue, but I couldn’t read their expression.
But then, I didn’t really need to.
Because her free hand was waving goodbye.
Wind buffeted my whole body, but I felt it strongest on my face. Like my cheeks were waving back at her. My stomach felt as though it was racing me down to the ocean, and it had a pretty big lead.
Two thousand feet above the water. And looking down, I could see the speed boat that was supposed to pick us up.
No comfort there. The boat was already speeding its way back to Hawaii. Or maybe it was starting the first pass on the search
for my body. There’d have to be a search of course. Our friends and families
