#1 Gregg Downer had not watched TV or listened to radio reports for the past two days. He couldn’t bear to spend any time at the memorial site. He was fifty-seven now, and his face was weathered and wrinkled more than it had been when he and Kobe were together in their early thirties.

#2 Downer was in charge of the playdate between his daughter, Brynn, and one of her friends. As he was walking upstairs, his phone started buzzing with calls and texts. His friends and colleagues from Lower Merion High School, where Kobe had been a star player, didn’t hear from him often now that he was a star in Los Angeles.

#3 The Mellets’ four children, all under age eleven, were bored and had pent-up energy to burn off. So they took advantage of who they were and where they lived. The couple were Lower Merion alumni and members of the class of 1998.

#4 The impromptu shrine was spreading like kudzu, from the sidewalk in front of the school’s gymnasium entrance to the doors themselves, and reporters and camera crews were lingering there, waiting to see if they would be allowed inside the school.

The Mellets’ four children, all under age eleven, were bored and had pent-up energy to burn off. So they took advantage of who they were and where they lived. The couple were Lower Merion alumni and members of the class of 1998.

The impromptu shrine was spreading like kudzu, from the sidewalk in front of the school’s gymnasium entrance to the doors themselves, and reporters and camera crews were lingering there, waiting to see if they would be allowed inside the school.

    #5

The reporters were allowed into the school only after they had gathered their B-roll. It took them until the darkness of early Monday morning to clear a path to enter and exit the school.

    #6

After the crash, Downer responded to a few of the calls that he had received Sunday. He remained in the same half daze that he had fallen into that afternoon, and Hughes told him not to come in to try to teach. Stay home and take what time you need.

    #7

Downer had to release a statement about the incident, so a press conference was arranged. He gave the local TV stations and newspapers and websites, but didn’t allow reporters to ask him about Kobe for a long time.

    #8

Downer was speaking about his relationship with Kobe, which had been the catalyst for the basketball program’s success. Without Kobe, Downer believed, none of the success that followed would have been possible.

    #9

Downer was asked about his relationship with Kobe and his parents. I had a wonderful relationship with Pam and Joe. … I learned about coaching from Joe, and I think of him in the highest of regards. He was crying, and his words stopped.

    #10

The group left their hotel early on the morning of the ceremony, and drove to the Staples Center. The scene around Gregg Downer inside the arena would have been a dream:
