Introduction:
Kitchens are the heart of the home. It’s where all the magic happens to give families the nutrition they need to start and end the day. But, with great magic comes great responsibility. The kitchen must be a safe place for the children cooking in them and their chef’s assistant: You as their parent or guardian, or any other responsible adult.
Kitchen Safety for Kids
Always hold and carry knives pointing downward.
Always use an oven mitt when taking things out of the oven and handling pots on the stove.
Always wipe spills when they happen. A slip on the floor while carrying hot food won’t be magical for anyone!
Always wear an apron that is the right size. Aprons protect your child from warm food/liquid and help fight against painful splashes of oil. The apron also protects the food from any germs from clothing. It works both ways!
Always wash fruit and vegetables before use, and never wash meat. The water won’t do anything to the meat, but germs (including harmful ones) can spread around your kitchen when the meat is washed.
Always ask for help if you feel uncomfortable doing a specific task.
