      Applause breaks from the wings of the church as the bride paces up the aisle with slow, grave steps. Between the gilded arches and the red-carpeted aisle the pews have all been removed to make room for trolley cameras, boom mikes, the hand-helds of the press, and a director in a cherry picker.

      At home many of those watching the frequent close-ups of the bride’s beaming, whiter-than-white smile on hi-def 3D TV’s flinch away as pink bubbles swell from her mouth and pop like some tentacled monster bursting from the screen. Followed by a precious little giggle.

      Some of the viewers argue over the propriety of bubble gum at such a solemn ceremony, or the horizontal slashes across the skirt of her scarlet dress,
